Two separate fires, approximately 8 hours apart destroyed two house on Thursday.
The first report came in around 10:30 Thursday morning. This fire was located on South 8th street. The resident of the home stated she was dressing her baby and started smelling smoke. A witness driving by stated he saw the windows blow out on the side of the house as the fire started.
The fire was put out and later in the day, relatives were helping save what they could from the home.
At about 6:30 p.m. a second house fire was reported. This fire was on South 6th Street. This house was also a total loss.
Even though the fires were close in proximity, Brownfield Fire Chief Dennis Rowe stated, “At this time, we do not suspect they are related, however the investigation is ongoing.”
A third fire was also reported during the day, but it was a controlled burn that appeared to get out of control. this fire was just off South 14th Street.
Rowe stated, “Even though we have had some rain, it is still very dry and with the heat we have been having, it will get drier. Please exercise caution around open flames and be careful when grilling or cooking outside.”
These fires are also hard on our firefighters as they battle the hot temperatures in the protective care they must wear and facing a fire. This is a good time to remind folks to drop bottled water off at any of our First Responder locations in Brownfield for these men and women.
