Vehicle accident damages railroad tracks

On Tuesday, Sept. 17th, approximately at 4:15 pm, the Brownfield Fire & Rescue was called out north of Wellman on US HWY 62/385 for a vehicle accident.

Upon arrival at the scene, the first responders observed a flatbed gooseneck trailer resting on the embankment of a hill to the west of the railroad tracks, which are located west of US 62/385. As the first responders ascended the hill, they discovered a black, four-door late model Chevy pickup on the opposite side of the hill that had been damaged in the accident.

Law enforcement at the scene reported that the driver, a male, may have fallen asleep. He was traveling in the northbound lane and started to lose control of the pickup, which was pulling a 50-foot gooseneck trailer, about a quarter mile from the Wellman city limits.

The pickup truck veered to the left, crossed the median, then crossed the southbound lanes and hit the railroad tracks on the shoulder. It continued up the hill, where the gooseneck became unhitched, and the pickup came to a rest on the west side of the hill.

Some of the tracks were dislodged from the crossties when the pickup struck them. The driver was treated at the scene and then released. Terry Co. Sheriff’s Dept., Brownfield Fire & Rescue, BRMC EMS, and Wellman Volunteer Fire Dept. were all on scene.
