All three school districts in Terry County were in tournament play this past weekend, and overall, it was good.
Brownfield Lady Cubs (0-1, 3-13)
The Brownfield Lady Cubs had a challenging week last week, starting with a game against 4A Snyder, where they lost 61-37. They then participated in the Brownfield Hoopin’ Cub Classic, beginning with a matchup against Hale Center. Despite their efforts, the Lady Cubs fell 50-38. Their next opponent was the #1 ranked Class 3A Girls Basketball team in the state, the Canadian Lady Cats, who dominated the game, defeating Brownfield 102-39. In their third tournament game, the Lady Cubs faced another 4A school, Fort Stockton, and lost a close match 41-39. However, the Lady Cubs bounced back in their final game of the tournament against Tulia, securing a significant victory with a score of 62-37.
This week, the Lady Cubs return to district action as they face the Denver City Fillies at home on Tuesday, December 17th. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM. Similar to Brownfield, the Fillies have struggled to find their footing this season, with a record of 3 wins and 11 losses, which is almost identical to Brownfield’s. However, Denver City has played one more district game, currently holding a 1-1 record in district play. They secured a win against Crane (44-32) but lost to Stanton (52-40).
The Lady Cubs, on the other hand, are 0-1 in district competition after their loss to Stanton (61-46). This upcoming game is expected to be very close. Following this match, Brownfield will hit the road to Odessa to take on the Compass Academy Lady Cougars. Compass has a record of 1-11 this season and is 0-2 in the district, with losses to Coahoma (63-22) and Crane (30-24). If the Lady Cubs play their cards right, they could enter the Christmas holiday break with a 2-1 record, setting themselves up for the Caprock tournament.

#14 Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs (0-0, 9-7)
The Runnin’ Cubs come into this week ranked #14 with an overall record of 9-7. Last week, they were ranked #11, but they likely dropped in the rankings following a loss to Levelland, where they fell short 57-52. Brownfield struggled with free throws in that game. During the Brownfield Hoopin’ Cub Classic, the Runnin’ Cubs reached the championship game. In the first round, they defeated Midland Christian 48-38 and then moved on to beat 4A Big Spring 64-50. In the semi-final round, Brownfield faced one of their district rivals, Coahoma, and achieved a decisive victory with a score of 83-42. This set up a championship showdown against #7 4A Estacado. Unfortunately, things began to unravel towards the end of the game, and Brownfield lost 84-64.
This week, the Runnin’ Cubs enter district action in their new district, starting with a home game against Denver City. Both Brownfield and the Mustangs have faced the same two teams: Big Spring and Slaton. Brownfield defeated Slaton 53-47 and Big Spring 64-50, while Denver City won against Big Spring 54-45 but lost to Slaton 65-50. On paper, the Runnin’ Cubs appear to have the advantage going into Tuesday night’s game. However, since Denver City is a rival, anything can happen. On Friday, Brownfield will compete against a 6-3 Odessa Compass Academy. The Cougars’ six wins have come against two homeschool teams, two non-varsity teams, one 2A school, and a small charter school. Like the Lady Cubs, the Runnin’ Cubs should be 2-0 heading into the Christmas break and ready for the Tatum Tough Tournament in Canyon.

Meadow Lady Broncos (0-0, 9-5)
The Meadow Lady Broncos are having some success this season. Their five losses have been to five tough teams, but right now they have a winning record and hope to stay the course. The Lady Broncos won their tournament this past weekend going 3-0 upending Wilson, Loop, and Patton Springs.
This week, Meadow will play both games at home, starting with a matchup against Crosbyton, who currently has a record of 1-11. Coach Vedder emphasizes that the opponent’s record doesn’t matter; the focus should be on playing our game. On Friday, Meadow will stay at home again to face O’Donnell, who is also struggling this season with a record of 3-11. The Lady Broncos are aiming to enter the Christmas break on a high note, hoping to achieve a five-game winning streak, and they will be preparing for the Smyer Tournament on December 27th.
Meadow Broncos (0-0, 8-11)
The Meadow Broncos are a young team that has faced a challenging schedule so far this season. This experience may benefit them as they approach district play. Although their record stands at 8-11, six of those losses were very close games that they could have won. The team has returned all five starters from last season, including two sophomores and one senior.
Like the Lady Broncos, the boys’ team will also be playing at home this week, facing off against Crosbyton and O’Donnell. The Chiefs have a record of 4-3, with their three losses coming from two 2A schools: Olton, which is ranked in the top 25, and New Deal. The other loss was to Valley, currently ranked 16th in 1A. On the other hand, O’Donnell has a record of 2-6, with those losses coming from some tough teams. The Broncos will have their hands full this week, but they could surprise us and head into the break with two consecutive wins.
Wellman-Union Lady Cats (0-0, 9-8)
Last week, the Lady Cats entered with a record of 7-5 and finished with a 9-8 record. On Tuesday, Wellman-Union faced Southland and won the game with a score of 36-15. They then traveled to Rotan for a tournament, where they had a challenging outing, ending with a 1-3 record. They lost to Guthrie by 4 points in overtime, followed by a narrow loss to Woodson by 3 points. In their next match, they faced a strong Harrold team and were defeated. However, they bounced back with a decisive victory against Abilene TLCA, winning the game 47-8.
This week, the Lady Cats will have only one game and they will face one of their rivals. The Lady Longhorns of Loop will make the short 8-mile trip to compete against Wellman-Union. Although the Lady Cats won their previous matchup against Loop 41-33 in November, the Lady Horns may be looking for revenge. Hopefully, the Lady Cats will secure a victory before the break.
Wellman-Union Wildcats (0-0, 7-10)
The Wildcats have made significant improvements over the past year. Last season, Wellman-Union finished with a record of 1-22. However, this season they currently stand at 7-10. Last week was particularly successful for the Wildcats. They secured a victory against Southland last Tuesday and then participated in the Rotan tournament. In the tournament, they won their first game against Harrold with a score of 67-25. Although they lost to Hermleigh and Petersburg afterward, they bounced back and won against Rotan.
The Wildcats, like the Lady Cats, have only one game this week, and it’s against a tough Loop team that has already defeated Wellman-Union this season with a score of 59-47. However, there has been about a month since their last games, so the Wildcats should have a good chance to secure a win against their rival and head into the break with smiles.
