Brownfield Lady Cubs (3-4, 7-19)
Unfortunately, the Lady Cubs suffered a setback last Tuesday, losing to Stanton 69-23. This dropped their district record to 3-4, keeping them in fourth place. However, the Lady Cubs received a much-needed break and did not have a game on Friday night. They are now focused on their upcoming match against the Denver City Fillies.
Brownfield will travel to Denver City on Tuesday, January 21st, for their second district game against the Fillies. The Fillies defeated the Lady Cubs 63-39 in their previous meeting. Denver City is in third place with a 5-3 record in the district, having lost to Stanton twice and Coahoma once. The Fillies are averaging 41 points per game while allowing 34 points. In contrast, the Lady Cubs are averaging approximately 33 points per game and giving up 48.

On Friday, January 24th, the Lady Cubs will return home to host Odessa Compass Academy, which is currently in last place with a 0-8 record in the district. Brownfield previously defeated Compass 41-24. Compass averages only 19 points per game in district play, allowing 47 points.
If the Lady Cubs can secure victories against Denver City and Compass, they will be tied for third place in the district at the end of the week.

Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs (6-0, 18-7)
The Runnin’ Cubs scored an impressive 107 points last Tuesday night against Stanton, establishing themselves as the #5 team in Class 3A. Coach McPherson gave the starters a break for portions of the game, allowing the rest of the bench players valuable playing time. Every player contributed by scoring at least one point in the 107-35 victory.
Like the Lady Cubs, the boys’ team had a night off last Friday. They are now set to travel to the DAG in DC to face the second-place Mustangs as they begin their second round of district action. Brownfield dominated the Mustangs in their last matchup with an 86-47 win. Last season, the Runnin’ Cubs went 2-0 against the Mustangs, winning by 20 points at home and then by five points in DC.
With Brownfield ranked in the top five, they will have a target on their back as one of their fiercest rivals. The Mustangs are expected to come out and play hard. Surprisingly, the Mustangs have not cracked the top 25, given their impressive wins over ranked opponents and close losses to other ranked teams and larger schools. In the first round of district play, the Mustangs are averaging 61 points per game, allowing nearly 49 points. The Runnin’ Cubs are averaging 83 points in district play while allowing only 42 points.
On Friday, January 24th, the Runnin’ Cubs will host Compass. In their first meeting, Brownfield won decisively, scoring 79-45. Compass currently sits in 5th place in the district with a 2-4 record and an overall record of 9-9.

Meadow Lady Broncos (3-2, 15-8) & Wellman-Union Lady Cats (3-2, 13-10)
The Lady Broncos faced off against the #12 Whitharral Lady Panthers last week, losing the game 61-24. However, they bounced back by defeating Amherst 60-13. This win brings their district record to 3-2, tying them for the second spot with Anton and Wellman-Union.
This week marks the beginning of the second round of district action. The Lady Broncos will start by taking on their cross-county rivals, Wellman-Union, at home. In their last matchup, Meadow won 51-44, a result that Wellman-Union is eager to avenge.

On Friday, January 24, the Lady Broncos will remain at home, seeking to redeem themselves against Anton, after losing to them 47-40 on January 7. The Lady Wildcats will conclude their week at home by facing #12 Whitharral. When Wellman-Union previously visited Hockley County, they suffered a 67-20 defeat to the Lady Panthers.
Throughout the first round of district play, the Lady Broncos averaged 45 points per game while allowing 36 points. Wellman-Union’s averages are slightly higher, at 47 points scored and 41 points allowed. Anton’s performance is similar to that of Meadow and Wellman-Union, as they also averaged 45 points per game and allowed 37 points. In contrast, Whitharral has an impressive average of 63 points scored and only 21 points allowed per game.
Clearly, Meadow, Wellman-Union, and Anton will face tough competition against one another during the second round of district play.

Both the Broncos and the Wildcats are currently tied for the fourth place spot, and since only four teams make it to the playoffs, their upcoming match is crucial. The two teams have not faced each other this season, but they will meet on Tuesday at Meadow, serving as a tie-breaker between these cross-county rivals.
Meadow is averaging 39 points per game while allowing 50, while Wellman-Union is scoring an average of 47 points and conceding 53.
On Friday, the Broncos will play at home against the Anton Bulldogs, who are averaging 58 points per game and allowing 45. Meanwhile, Wellman-Union will also be at home, taking on the #15 Whitharral Panthers, who boast an impressive scoring average of 70 points per game and allow just 22.
