Terry Co. schools compete in district cross country

All three school districts in Terry County competed in District Cross Country yesterday, Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2023, and a lot of medals were given out.

The Brownfield Cubs & Lady Cubs traveled over Lubbock to take on their district opponents of Denver City, Dimmitt, Friona, Lamesa, Littlefield, and Muleshoe at Mae Simmons Park. Of course, all classes (1A-6A) of Region I will run regional cross country at Mae Simmons. The varsity girls went first and Kate Hesse came in second place with a time of 13:16.95 and Rayleigh Perry finished 8th. Leah Ortega finished 24th, Ashlynn Cristan 37th, Jimena Morales 40th, Kayleigh Saldana 41st, and Lucretio Hopkins 42nd. Both Kate and Rayleigh qualified for Regionals.

The boys were next and Kanyon Cantrell earned second place with a time of 18:00.64 and Joel Morales placed 7th. To round out the rest of the team, Braydyn Luther finished 19th, Jayden Tijerina 22nd, and Jeron Lawrence 26th. Kanyon and Joel qualified individually for the Regional Meet, however, the team earned third place and will be competing at regionals as a team.

Meadow Broncos and Lady Broncos headed over to Whitharral for their district meet against Amherst, Anton, Cotton Center, Morton, Whiteface, and Whitharral. The Lady Broncos went first and Joey Harrington finished 6th with a time of 15:17.27. With her 6th place finish, Joey will advance to regionals.

Next, the boys took to the course and Kyle Woodard finished first winning the District 7-1A Championship. To round out the team, Brayson Parker finished 5th, Xander Haile 13th, Bryan Parker 19th, Isaac Estrada 20th, Armando Soto 25th, and Adrian Fraire 26th. The Meadow varsity boys placed 3rd overall in district and advanced to regionals as a team.

Wellman-Union Wildcats and Lady Cats also competed in District 8-1A cross country on Tuesday. Their competition was held at Lubbock Christian University against Dawson, Grady, Klondike, Loop, and Sands. The Lady Cats Cross Country team earned 3rd place as a team and will head to regionals. Cloe Guenter finished 9th place with a time of 14:43. To round out the team, Emalyn Navarro finished 14th, Aliyah DePoyster 16th, Mariah Cochran 17th, and Mattie Seymore 18th.

The Wildcats had a great showing at district as they won the district championship as a team. Cam Arendall led the team finishing 3rd with a time of 17:50. Rounding out the team, Tel Harlan finished 6th, Angel Ramirez-Hernandez 10th, Eli DePoyster 11th, Aron Rempel 13th, Ty Huston 17th, and Brason Dill 24th. Cam, Tel, Angel, and Eli also advanced individually.

Brownfield, Meadow, and Wellman Regional Cross Country Qualifiers will run on Monday, October 23, 2023. 1A girls at 10:30 a.m., 1A boys at 11:00 a.m., 3A girls at 11:30 a.m., and 3A boys at 12:00 p.m.
