The Cubs tennis team traveled to Big Spring on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, for their Bi-District round matchup against San Angelo Lake View and came home with the win.

The Cubs got off to a strong start in doubles, led by the Brownfield boys who swept Lake View with wins from Dominique and Damian Ussery (6-2, 6-4), Ethan McPherson, and John Fields (6-2, 6-1), and Kaden Connett and Jacob Arguellez (6-0, 6-1). On the girl’s side, the Lady Cubs dropped a tightly contested match at the top line, but picked up wins from Madilynn Brisendine and Rylee Richolson (6-3, 6-4) and Madison Bolton and Raegen Franklin (6-1, 6-3). In the mixed doubles line, Zerach Garcia and Taryn Ribble battled in a great match but ultimately fell just short in a third-set super tiebreaker.

After gaining a 5-2 advantage out of doubles, it was time for the Cubs to take the court in singles. Brownfield was able to quickly secure wins from John Fields (6-3, 6-0), and Damian Ussery (6-2, 6-1) to give the Cubs a 7-2 advantage.

At three-line girls singles, Madilynn Brisendine battled back after dropping the first set 4-6, to come back and grab a victory over her opponent in three sets, 4-6, 6-0, 10-4, and give the Cubs an 8-3 lead. Rylee Richolson would secure the 9th win for the Cubs with a 6-1, 6-1 victory and Kaden Connett would give the Cubs the overall win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Ethan McPherson won his match 6-0, 6-2 and Emalee Martinez also won her match 7-6(4), 6-1 right as matches were being pulled off the court.

This win marks the fourth consecutive year for the tennis team to win the Bi-District championship. Next, they will travel to Andrews on Thursday, October 12, at 10:00 a.m. to take on the Pecos Eagles in the Area round.
