Thursday, December 7: Marks the beginning of Hanukkah

  • Hanukkah (also spelled “Chanukah”) is an eight-day winter “festival of lights,” which begins each year on the 25th day of the Jewish calendar month of Kislev. Because the Hebrew calendar is based on the lunar cycle, the dates of Jewish holidays according to the Gregorian calendar change from year-to-year. For this reason, the beginning of Hanukkah can range from late November to late December. In short, Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after a group of Jewish warriors defeated the occupying Greek armies. The festival celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and spirituality over materiality.

Thursday, December 7:  National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

  • At dawn on Sunday, December 7, 1941, Imperial Japan attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii with warplanes. This was an attempt to cripple the fleet and hinder U.S. intervention in other Japanese targets in the South Pacific. This attack catapulted the U.S. into World War II. Imperial Japanese military anticipated that Nazi Germany would defeat Great Britain and the Soviet Union and that Japan would control the Pacific. The attack was opposed by Japanese admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who cautioned against a war with the United States, but he was overruled. After the attack, he said, “We have awakened a sleeping giant and have instilled in him a terrible resolve.” He was right. Although airfields, port facilities, and warships were severely damaged and two battleships, the Utah and the Arizona, were destroyed, the attack mobilized the United States, and for about four years the U.S. fought in both the Pacific theatre and European theatre. On Sept. 2, 1945, General Douglas MacArthur accepted Japan’s unconditional surrender. Today the Arizona is a memorial and a national park.

Thursday, December 21: Winter Begins

  • That’s right folks… it’s NOT winter until! The first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere is marked by the winter solstice, which occurs on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at 10:27 P.M. EST. For the northern half of Earth (the Northern Hemisphere), the winter solstice occurs annually on December 21 or 22. (The Southern Hemisphere’s winter solstice occurs in June.) The winter solstice is the day with the fewest hours of sunlight throughout the year, making it the “shortest day” of the year. Thankfully, after we reach the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and longer again until we reach the summer solstice—the first day of summer and the longest day of the year.

Monday, December 25: Christmas Day!

  • Christmas Day is an annual Christian festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. For Western Christian churches, Christmas Day always occurs on December 25, though some cultures observe the main celebration on the night prior, Christmas Eve. Specifically, the meaning of Christmas comes in the remembrance and celebration of God’s presence in our world through Jesus, God-made flesh. “Christmas” comes from the Old English Cristes maesse, meaning “Christ’s Mass.”
