A coalition of more than 70 Texas school districts is asking the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to postpone the complete implementation of a new statewide data reporting system. The districts argue that unresolved technical issues could result in widespread errors in reporting, affecting both their funding and accountability measures. This new system, which gathers important student, staff, and financial data, was tested by over 300 districts last school year but has since raised significant concerns among district leaders.

In a letter sent to TEA Commissioner Mike Morath, school leaders outlined their concerns about the system developed by the Ed-Fi Alliance. They cited numerous unresolved data errors, claiming that these errors could have serious consequences, from inaccurate student enrollment numbers to incomplete financial reporting. The districts are requesting a delay in the full launch of the system until it can be fully vetted and stabilized. The new data system is crucial in determining if schools meet state performance standards and directly influences the amount of funding they receive. District leaders have raised concerns that errors in the system could lead to inaccurate data submissions, which could then negatively affect their state funding.

In the letter, districts are requesting the TEA to extend the pilot program to ensure that the system is ready for full-scale use. They are also urging for additional training for district staff to better navigate the new system, and calling for an independent audit to verify the accuracy of the submitted data. The TEA has stated that school districts will have sufficient time to fix any errors before the final reporting deadlines. However, district officials are still doubtful. They have noted that many staff members are unsure about how to handle certain issues and are concerned about potential consequences if problems persist beyond the state’s reporting deadlines.

The new system was first introduced to decrease manual labor and enhance data sharing between the state and districts. Although many districts are in favor of the upgrade’s concept, they feel that the system requires more time and improvement before being fully implemented. The result of this transition is crucial, as school funding and accountability measures depend on the accuracy of the reported data. The district leaders are asking for the pilot program to be extended and for more transparency on data security. They want the TEA to ensure that safeguards are in place during the system upgrade. As more districts sign the letter, the pressure on the TEA to address these issues continues to grow. Many district officials are worried about the upcoming school year’s data reporting requirements.
TownTalk reached out to Brownfield ISD Superintendent Chris Smith and he said, “BISD has always strived to exceed requirements established by the TEA so while we are supportive of the delay we will continue to do the work to grow our students.”
