christmas-storytime-group-horizontalYoakum County Library in Plains closed out the 2016 StoryTime with jolly fun on Wednesday, December 14, 2016.

Following a discussion about the month, as well as the “Days of the Week” song, the group helped themselves to silver jingling bells on pipe cleaners. The children enthusiastically sang “Jingle Bells” as well as a new song called “Ring the Bells,” followed by a rhyme complete with bell-holding volunteers called “5 Little Bells.”

With the morning theme of Christmas decorations and the approaching wintery weather forecast, the book “Snowmen at Christmas” was the first reading. A special outing to the Plains State Bank as well as a short tour of the Courthouse led the youngsters while singing a few carols as they journeyed around the square.

Each child carried with them a “treasure” hunt Bingo card. With each stop, the children looked for specific Christmas decoration items. The Plains State Bank staff graciously hosted our group for pictures in front of their beautiful tree as well as treating the children to cookies, which fitly used as decorations to a kid-sized tree!

With treats in hand, the group safely wandered across the street to the Yoakum County Courthouse to hunt for more decorations. As the juniors marveled at a snowman and the woodland snow scene, the County Clerk’s office welcomed the children with a bowl of candy! The smiles and thank you’s were given in return for the sweets as the hunt continued to the building’s center. With eyes wide open, the youngsters marveled at the life-sized toy soldiers (one of them holding an elf) and also the gigantic, beautiful Christmas tree. County officials and staff came to sweetly greet the children and Human Resources deputy handed out fruity candy canes to the outstretched hands. Many more thanks as we walked down to the County Judge’s office to find the last few items on our Bingo cards. With more over-the-top generosity, the children gratefully received a baggie thoughtfully-packed with a beautiful Christmas cookie and crackers.

Upon returning to the library, the happy children prepared their plates for more Christmas goodies for our party celebration. “Pluto’s Christmas Tree” and “On Ice” were the two short video clips enjoyed. To add to their bounty, the children received a Scholastic book and another goodie bag as a Christmas gift from Yoakum County Library. Two of the attending children also won a door prize: Sofia and Kefira.

Those in attendance were Payton, Aspen, Elijah, Tabitha, Selah, Kefira, Gabe, Jazmine, Sofia, Cecilia, and Bryson.

Children of all ages are encouraged to attend StoryTime with their caregivers. The group generally meets every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. during the school year.  However, there will not be any meetings until January 4, 2017.
