The Lady Cubs Basketball Team is experiencing renewed excitement under their new coach. Last season, Brownfield secured a spot in the playoffs as the fourth seed from District 3-3A. They faced Crane, the champions of District 4-3A, and found themselves down by 12 points late in the fourth quarter. However, the Lady Cubs mounted an impressive comeback, forcing the game into overtime and ultimately winning 51-48. Later in the spring semester, Coach Michelle Wyatt announced her retirement, prompting BISD to hire Coach Ja’lee Carver as her successor.
The UIL girls’ basketball season began on November 1st, and the Lady Cubs have already played four games, currently holding a record of 0-4. Despite these four losses, they are not backing down. The defeats have come against tough opponents, including #9 Whitharral, #23 Whiteface, #7 Idalou, and the always-challenging New Deal squad.

Coach Carver stated, “The overarching goal for the Lady Cubs this season is to grow, learn, and invest in the grind.” And according to Coach Carver this attitude will reflect a commitment to both individual and team development with focusing on hard work and continuous improvement throughout the season. Coach Carver reiterated the coaching staff will emphasize the importance of perseverance and teamwork, aiming to cultivate a positive and competitive environment. So another in other words… keep an eye on the Lady Cubs; they are determined to push forward and will not back down.
The Brownfield Lady Cubs are returning a strong core of players and are committed to success on the hardwood this season. Senior Lucy Guzman will play as a guard, while senior Maya Martinez will take on the small forward position. Last season, Maya really got into the groove by finding a way score often and she’ll continue with that. Junior Alliey Coffey returns as the point guard, and Coach Carver states, “She is bar none… that’s what I love about her. She will be my starting point guard.” Junior Kayleigh Saldana will play in the post position and has worked hard in the offseason to get stronger, promising to make an impact in the paint. Additionally, junior Mariah Perez, another guard, is reliable for getting the ball and making shots when necessary.

Four other players will round out the bench and contribute significantly to the team. Senior Micah Herrera will provide leadership to the group, while Junior Janah Burns will add quickness when coming off the bench. The other two players are Sophomore Caylee Stell and Freshman Allyson Guzman. Although they are the youngest on the team, they are eager to learn and are not afraid to take the court. Watch how much they will grow this season!

It has often been said that “success generates success,” and the Lady Cubs certainly have that advantage.
