One thing about living in the country and living in a house that is nearly 75 years old is that you will have mice. I just despise mice! I am sure there is a purpose for their lives, but I am just not sure how that purpose relates to me! I am reminded of the time, when Kyle was very small, he came into the house just furiously scratching his arm. He said, “Momma. Why did God make skeeties?” (Skeeties being mosquitoes.) Well Kyle, I feel that same way about mice. Why did God make them??
The thing about mice is that they can get through just the smallest, almost non-existent hole! It is almost impossible to find where they come in from. And while they are in my house, they live a little evidence of their presence in the form of what we all call “mouse pills.” Oooh! It just makes me cringe to think of these vermin occupying the same space as me! You really have to stay on your guard and stay alert to keep finding the areas from which they enter your house.
Well, the same is true of sin in our lives. You may not even realize it is there until you see the “evidence” it leaves. You may have to stop and think, “Where did that come from?” We have to be on guard in our daily lives to stop and plug up the holes that might allow sin to gain a foothold in our hearts. We have to stay in daily conversation with God and stay in His Word to make sure all the holes in our lives are filled up with only good.
We need to be attending church and hanging out with other Christians. We need to be learning from watching the lives of older Christians and asking questions about how they have put on the full armor of God in their lives and how it has helped them stay strong and firm in their faith. We need to study God’s Word daily. Not just checking a box that says you read your Bible today. Actually study God’s Word and see what He has for you inside.
We have to listen for God’s voice and His guidance in our lives. And, we have to spend enough time listening for His voice that we actually recognize when He is speaking to us! We have to lay out our prayers before Him and give everything over to Him.
All of this leads to filling up the holes in our lives that would otherwise allow sin to sneak in and leave its nasty evidence everywhere we go.
Seek the Lord with all your heart! Plug up all the vulnerable areas in your life with His Word and His guidance! It will make a difference!
