We got our bi-annual snow this past week. We just don’t get much snow anymore. Certainly not of the measurable variety! We were blessed with a good rain, followed by a pretty good snow. Great moisture for our land. As I was leaving for church on Sunday morning, the roads were still pretty covered. As I pulled out onto my road, there was one set of tracks to follow. When I reached the highway, there was a west bound set of tracks and an east bound set. You could not see any of the stripes on the road, or even where the shoulder began and and the pavement ended. All I had to rely on was the driving skill of some unknown driver ahead of me. I had to trust in someone I did not even know to make sure I got where I was going.
As I drove, I thought about how important the tracks are that we follow. The ones that go before you. Before we had GPS systems on our tractors, guys would run a lister (a plow that marks the rows for the year) across the ground with an eye straight ahead at some mark to be sure the first rows were straight. Each row after would follow that first path. There were guys that people knew of as “really good listers.” Those rows were for the whole year. They needed to be straight and true. They still list, but now they have guidance systems on their tractors that guide the tractor in a straight path. It works great as long as you keep your hands from trying to guide the wheel. Once your hands start making the slightest little adjustment on the steering wheel, the guidance goes off.
In our lives, it is so important to make sure that we are following a path that is straight and true. And that we keep our hands from trying to make adjustments. God has laid out each of our paths from day one. He waits to guide us. He wants to guide us. We just need to follow His pathway for our lives. It is also important that we have people in our lives who follow that straight path, so we can follow them. Jesus told His disciples to “Follow Me.” Oh that we would live lives worthy of being followed! That we would mark a path that would be worthy of the next generation following. And we can do this if we commit each day to the Lord and to His path for our lives.
When you get up each morning. Even before your feet touch the floor, ask God to guide your steps in His path. Ask Him to be your guide throughout the day. Then keep your hands off the wheel! It will make a difference!
