Acting Texas Comptroller Kelly Hancock has released the state’s sales tax information for September, revealing that Texas sales tax revenue totaled $3.97 billion, representing a 3.2 percent increase compared to September 2024. Most of the sales tax revenue for September is based on sales made in August and remitted to the agency in the same month.
The City of Brownfield reported a revenue of $165,180.73, which signifies an 11.17% increase from $148,571.62 in August of the previous year. Year-to-date revenue also rose, increasing from $1,616,790.07 to $1,382,470.78, representing a growth of 16.94%.

Terry County also experienced a boost in sales tax revenue, rising from $64,237.31 to $77,013.13, representing a 19.88% increase compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date revenue for Terry County improved, rising from $600,318.52 to $652,204.40, representing an 8.64% increase.
In contrast, the City of Meadow has seen a decline in revenue for two consecutive months, reporting $1,863.77, which is a 14.48% decrease from $2,179.59 last year. Meadow’s year-to-date revenue also dropped by 19.01%, falling from $19,152.61 to $15,510.68. Similarly, the City of Wellman has experienced a revenue decrease for the second consecutive month, with figures declining from $710.44 to $663.44, representing a 6.61% decrease. According to Hancock, the remittances from sectors influenced mainly by business spending showed mixed results last month. After strong collections in August, receipts from the mining sector fell by double digits compared to the same month last year, while the wholesale trade and construction sectors both experienced moderate growth. Collections from the manufacturing sector were slightly negative.

In major sectors primarily driven by consumer spending, the retail trade sector saw a 3.2% increase compared to September 2024. Within the retail trade sector, electronic shopping demonstrated the most significant gains, with general merchandise, clothing, and accessory stores, as well as electronics and appliance stores reporting solid increases compared to last September. However, receipts from the services sector were down slightly for the month. Restaurant receipts increased by 3.3% from the same period last year, although this growth is below the rate of inflation for food consumed away from home.
Total sales tax revenue for the three months ending in September 2025 was up 5.3% compared to the same period a year ago. Sales tax remains the largest source of state funding for the state budget, accounting for 58% of all tax collections.
