Lady Cubs

The Brownfield Lady Cubs basketball team traveled to Coahoma to face the #25 Bulldogettes in their fifth district game. In the first quarter, the game started off defensively for the first minute and a half. However, the Lady Cubs were the first to score with a layup from #23 Caylee Stell, followed by another layup from #3 Lucy Guzman. Coahoma then found their rhythm and scored two quick baskets, taking the lead 5-4. Brownfield responded with five points, but the rest of the quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with Coahoma ultimately outscoring Brownfield 13-11.

In the second quarter, Brownfield struck first again, tying the game at 13-all. However, things began to unravel for the Lady Cubs as they allowed an 11-0 run from the Bulldogettes, who then led 24-13. The Lady Cubs managed to add four points to their score, but Coahoma went on another 5-0 run. Guzman added two more points, but Coahoma ended the second quarter with a 7-0 run, taking a commanding 36-19 lead at halftime.

Moving into the third quarter, the Lady Cubs experienced a bit more success, particularly on defense, managing to hold Coahoma to just eight points. #11 Mariah Perez contributed four points, #31 Maya Martinez hit a three-pointer, and #21 Ly’Tiona Fisher added two points. The Lady Cubs outscored Coahoma 9-8 in this quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lady Cubs struggled defensively again, allowing 17 points from the Bulldogettes. Guzman managed to make one of her two free throws but did not score in the third or fourth quarters. #12 Brynlee Morin added two field goals and one free throw, Stell contributed a layup, and Martinez was fouled on a shot, completing a three-point play the old-fashioned way. It’s important to note that Coahoma went to the free-throw line 19 times throughout the game, making 12, while the Lady Cubs only went to the line seven times, scoring five points in the second half.

Coach Carver stated, “We are struggling to stay consistent. As we grow and learn the game, we just have a hard time putting a whole game together. I’m very thankful that I do not have to coach attitude, effort, and energy as they give those every game. However, we simply just are judging to work on the component of doing the little things well the whole game.”

The Lady Cubs now sit tied in fourth place with Crane. Lucy Guzman was the lead point scorer with 10 points, and Mariah Perez and Maya Martinez both had eight a piece. The Lady Cubs will host Crane on Friday night, Jan. 10th.
