How Healthy Is Terry County?

How healthy is Terry County? According to a health report made by Texas A&M Agrilife Extension, it might be worse than you think. The Population of Terry County is 11,831 and out of those 32% of adults report being in fair or poor health. According to the CDC in a 2020 survey data from the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, which collects data from U.S. residents on health risk behaviors, chronic conditions and use of preventative care. In 2020, 14.7 percent of adults in the U.S. reported having fair or poor health. and 15% in Texas.

41% of adults in Terry County are categorized as obese. According to Healthy People 2020, most Americans do not eat a healthful diet and are not physically active. America’s Health Rankings reports that as of 2019, the obesity rate among adults is 34.8% compared to the national average rate of 30.9%. Texas currently ranks 10th in obesity among all US states. Obesity goes hand and hand with physical inactivity with  40% of adults reporting being physically inactive in Terry County

For Health outcomes, compared to Texas and the rest of the nation Terry County is just above the average in all of these health outcomes, with Cardiovascular deaths at 51.5 of adults out of 10,000 adults and the nation is only 42.2. In 2017 Heart disease was the number 1 cause of death.

Diabetes Prevalence which refers to the percentage of people ages 20-79 who have type 1 or type 2  is up to 16% of the population of adults who have been diagnosed compared to Texas which is only 12.2%. The number of diabetes cases in the last decade in the US has amounted to 1,962,059 and it is projected that by 2030, there will be about 2,851,687 diabetes cases. Pre-mature death also is another one that is well above average with 1,120 out of 10,000 in the county compared to Texas’s 700. 32% of adults in Terry County report being poor or fair of health compared to Texas which is only at 21% and the nation with 17%.
