Horton’s High School Football Picks: Week 9

by Eric

Welcome back to Horton’s Pick ‘Ems. I went 70-19 last week. 6A and 1A got away from me. As always, most games are from the West Texas area, which includes the South Plains, Panhandle, Permian Basin, Big Country, and the Concho Valley. In the list below, there are 98 games in Week 9, Oct. 24-26, 2024. Teams with the ( ) next to it mean they are ranked in the state in their respective class and divisions. The school (team) on the left is Eric Horton’s pick. We encourage you all to pick which team will win.

This week, every district is in competition, including the four four-team districts: 1-3A DI, 2-3A DI, 3-3A DII, and 3-4A DI. There are currently only 15 undefeated teams in the Pick ‘Ems: Buena Vista, Bushland, Post, Gruver, Hawley, Motley County, Panhandle, Permian, Randall, Ropes, Seminole, Spur, Stamford, Sunray, and Whiteface.

Here are a few notable games: Randall, currently ranked #6, will be facing West Plains. Although these two schools don’t have much history—West Plains is only in its third season and they have never played against each other—pride is on the line for Canyon ISD.

Next, the Bushland Falcons will host Shally. According to Dave Campbell’s predictions, the Falcons are favored to win by 3 points, and I believe the home team has the advantage this time.

Arguably the biggest game of the night will feature #4 Sunray, who is 7-0, hosting #7 Panhandle, also with a 7-0 record. While Sunray is likely to emerge victorious, it promises to be a very close match.
