As the 2024 Texas high school football season took center stage, most, if not all, varsity football teams were excited, and each of their hopes was to have a good season. Unfortunately, that has not been the case for the four teams in District 2-3A DI, Brownfield, Denver City, Kermit, & Lamesa. Friday night these four teams, with a combined 2-26 record, begin their quick district journey. The 0-7 Brownfield Cubs will host the 0-7 Denver City Mustangs and the 1-6 Kermit Yellow Jackets will host the 1-6 Lamesa Golden Tors.
Here’s a recap: Brownfield has scored 53 points all season, which is a little over 7 points a game on average, and the Cubs have allowed 337 points, which is an average of 48 points a game. Brownfield’s best showing of the season was in the second week against Slaton at home, with the Cubs scoring first. However, the score was 15-7 at the half in favor of the Tigers. Early in the 4th, Brownfield would make it a one-score game, only down 21-14, but the Tiger were able to pull away. The last time the Cubs had a winless season was in 2009, and the last time they had a one-win season was in 2020.
The Denver City Mustangs are in unfamiliar territory this season. A new head coach, a new offense and defense, and a winless season have not been the best ingredients. The Mustangs hosted Roosevelt in their first game of the season, and both teams put on a show with four overtimes, but the Eagles won by two points. The Mustangs are averaging about 12 points a game and allowing 42 points a game. Denver City has never in its football program history had a winless season, and the last one win season they had was 75 years ago in 1949. The last losing season the Mustangs had was in 2016 with a 4-7 record and losing in bi-district to Monahans 62-7.
Kermit is one of two teams that has a win in their pocket. In week five, the Yellow Jackets beat Van Horn 48-3. Let’s put this matchup in perspective. Kermit has 250 more high school students than Van Horn, and the Eagles were bumped back up from 6-man to 11-man. Kermit has been able to put up 152 points this season and is averaging 22 points a game. This means they can score, and unlike the other two teams above, they’ve scored at least once in every game. Of course, you don’t have to go that far back to the last time Kermit had a winless season, which was in 2020 and last season was the last time they had a one-win season.
Lamesa also got a new coach this season. Coach Efrain Ramos was the defensive coordinator for the Anna Coyotes, which were the 2023 Class 4A DI State Champions. Pretty impressive! Out of all four teams the Golden Tors have the best resume on paper. The are averaging 37 points a game and allowing 51. They have one win against Dimmitt in week four 48-34, a close loss to Tulia the next week losing 42-35 and an overtime loss to River Road in week seven 35-34. The last time Lamesa had a winless season was in 2019 and the last time they had a one-win season was in 2016, also the last time Lamesa had a winning season was 23 year ago in 2001, when they went 8-4 and was ranked #1 at one point in 3A.
The Cubs will host the Denver City Mustangs tonight, Friday, Oct. 24, @ 7:00 pm the Cubs will travel to Lamesa on Friday, Nov. 1, @ 7:00 pm, and their final game of the regular season will be at home vs Kermit on Friday, Nov. 8 @ 7:00 pm
