Horton’s High School Football Picks: Week 11

by Eric

Welcome back to Horton’s Pick ‘Ems. I was unable to get to week 10 picks. Anyway, the week before last, Oct. 24-26, 2024, I went 82-16 last week. As always, most games are from the West Texas area, which includes the South Plains, Panhandle, Permian Basin, Big Country, and the Concho Valley. In the list below, there are 98 games in Week 11, Nov. 7-9, 2024. Teams with the ( ) next to it mean they are ranked in the state in their respective class and divisions. The school (team) on the left is Eric Horton’s pick. We encourage you all to pick which team will win.

This is Texas high school football’s last regular season week, and some notable games will crown the district champs. I’ll begin with Dist. 2-3A DI. Coming into the last week, the district as a whole is 6-30, Lamesa is 3-6, Denver City is 2-7, and Brownfield is 0-9. Tonight, Lamesa travels over to Denver City with the district title up for grabs. It’s Senior Night for DC, and in their past two games, they are averaging 46 point a game as where the Golden Tors are averaging 42, but have allowed less points averaging 13 and Mustangs with 19. Denver City should take this one.

Next is an exciting 2A showdown as Abernathy hosts Post, with both teams undefeated in the district. However, Post remains unbeaten on the season, holding a record of 9-0, while Abernathy is at 7-2. Abernathy’s two losses came in the first two weeks of the season against #1 Stratford (2A DII) and #4 Sunray (2A DI). Since those losses, Abernathy has won seven straight games. DCTF lists Abernathy as a one-point favorite, but I believe Post will claim the district crown tonight.

In the Big Country, District 4-2A DI features the #1 Stamford team and the #5 Hawley team. Both teams are undefeated and have a long-standing rivalry, as they are only 27 miles apart. The Bulldogs have not defeated the Bearcats in six seasons. Will that change tonight? I believe it could—Stamford for the District Title!
