Very few people gain notoriety from the West Texas area. To name a few there’s Buddy Holly, Patrick Mahomes, and Johnathan Martinez. As you probably don’t know who Martinez is, I shall inform you of his latest feats. The 30-year-old hails from Plainview, Texas, and was in a recent UFC bout on their PPV program. Martinez would have his first child at a young age with his wife Amber. He would then leave his parent’s house at the age of 15 years old to help raise his child. This is when he would decide to fight full-time. His wife Amber would hold down the fort, working two jobs to support their family. Martinez’s fighting career started in 2014, when he ended up on UFC Fight Night on October 27, 2018, replacing an injured Gavin Tucker. Martinez would go on to lose that fight by unanimous decision but that would not hold him back.

UFC 301 was hosted in Rio De Janeiro at the Jeunesse Arena. He now holds a 19-5 record and as of May 7, 2024, he is listed as the number 14th fighter in the bantamweight division. As the stage was set, he would face the veteran Jose Aldo. The fight would go on to the third round where Aldo would establish dominance. Staggering Martinez with a flurry of punches and kicks eventually led Martinez to be taken to the ground. He would look to move into a full-guard position defending himself from Aldo’s mounting pressure. Exhaustion would show in Martinez’s face, those features would soon change to desperation as time was ticking down. Martinez would go on to lose the fight to Aldo. Aldo, a future hall of famer would offer the young fighter words of encouragement. Those of us in the surrounding area should do the same and support him through his wins and losses. I know I will be watching him make his way to greatness and etch his name in UFC history.
