FIVE THINGS TO KNOW FOR SEPTEMBER

by Eric

Here is a list of five things to know about the month of September 2023

1. National Suicide Prevention Month

Everybody has a role to play in preventing suicide, and the Lifeline has lots of ways you can take part. With your help, we all can spread awareness about suicide prevention and mental health, and save lives. Suicide is not inevitable for anyone. By starting the conversation, providing support, and directing help to those who need it, we can prevent suicides and save lives. Evidence shows that providing support services, talking about suicide, reducing access to means of self-harm, and following up with loved ones are just some of the actions we can all take to help others. By offering immediate counseling to everyone who may need it, local crisis centers provide invaluable support at critical times and connect individuals to local services.

2. Terry County Suicide Prevention & Awareness Walk, Sept.9

Although September is National Suicide Prevention Month, the local Terry County Suicide Awareness organization takes part in advocating awareness for this issue. On Saturday, September 9, 2023, the Terry County Suicide Awareness organization will have its annual Terry County Suicide Prevention & Awareness Walk. It will take place at the Brownfield Cub Football Indoor Complex from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

3. Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance Day, Sept. 11

On September 11, 2001, ordinary Americans performed extraordinary acts of heroism.  Firefighters and police officers rushed into crumbling buildings and raging fires to save others.  EMTs, construction workers, colleagues, and strangers tended to the wounded.  Passengers and crewmembers gave their lives to thwart another attack.  And a generation of women and men answered the call of duty by joining our Armed Forces to defend our freedom and our democracy. These patriots… people of undaunted courage, uncommon resolve, and unwavering perseverance — are forever ingrained in our national character.  They are reminders that we are a great country because we are a good people.  On this Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, we pay tribute to the heroes and victims who lost their lives on September 11, and we recommit ourselves to the spirit of unity, patriotism, and service that carried our Nation through in the days that followed.

4. Meet the Chiefs, Sept. 11

No, not the Kansas City Chiefs, but the new City of Brownfield Police Chief and Fire & Rescue Chief. At the end of 2022, both the former Brownfield Chief and Fire & Rescue Chief resigned. Tony Serbantez began his tenure as Terry County Judge, and Dennis Rowe retired. This caused the Brownfield City Council to look and recruit new chiefs. This will be a time for the community of Brownfield and Terry County to come out and meet the new Police Chief, Chris Kotzur, and Fire & Rescue Chief, James Woolard. Both have become a huge asset to the community

5. Terry County Farm Tour, Sept. 21

The third Thursday in September is dedicated to the annual Terry County Farm Tour. This year, the Terry County Soil & Water Conservation District will celebrate the 68th Annual Terry County Farm Tour. This year’s theme will be “Farming Forward, the Future of Ag”. As always, the Young Farmer of the Year and the Farm Family of the Year will be honored. It will take place Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023, at The Armory.
