After breezing through their first three district games the Fillies got their first test on Saturday before pulling out an exciting 8-5 win over Roosevelt, but then came up short against Brownfield dropping a 4-2 decision to the Lady Cubs on Tuesday.
With the Fillies trailing 5-4 against Roosevelt in the bottom of the 6th Kathleen Chavez provided all the excitement with a grand slam homerun that put the Fillies up 8-5.
After the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 2nd inning the Fillies started playing catch up. They came back with 2 runs of their own to narrow the count to 3-2 only the see Roosevelt counter with single runs in both the 3rd and 4th innings to up their lead to 5-2.
With the Fillies loading the bases in both the 4th and 5th innings and trying to break the game open they could only come up with one run in both of those innings and were still trailing 5-4 heading into the 6th inning. Once again the Fillies loaded the bases, but time Chavez provided the big hit to put the Fillies up 8-5. Roosevelt threatened in the top of the 7th getting a runner to 2nd, but Fillie pitcher Jewel Santillan settled in getting the final two outs.
In addition to her homerun Chavez also had a double as part of her 3 hit and 4 RBI day. Santillan contributed 2 hits and one RBI and Haleigh Gonzales, Denisse Saenz, Heidi Gonzales, Hanna Gonzales, Johnna Hix, and Kelsey De La Rosa all finished with one hit each.
Santillan went the distance giving up five runs on nine hits, walked one and had three strike outs.
In the Brownfield game the Fillies once again found themselves playing catchup after the Lady Cubs grabbed a 2-0 lead on a RBI double down the right field line in the bottom of the 3rd inning. After the Lady Cubs upped their lead to 3-0 in the 5th inning the Fillies came back with two runs in their half of the 6th inning to narrow the lead to 3-2. However the Lady Cubs iced the game with one more run in the bottom of the 6th for the final 4-2 win.
Haley Villarreal paced the Fillies with 2 hits and 1 RBI. Santillan, Heidi Gonzales, and Johnna Hix all finished with one hit.
Santillan once again went the distance giving up the 4 runs on 4 hits, walked three and had one strike outs.
Haleigh Gonzales and Johnna Hix made the defensive plays of the game with both outfielders running down fly balls for outs.
Both the Fillies and Brownfield ended the first half of district play with identical 4-1 district marks and Roosevelt is sitting in third at 3-2 after being upset by Slaton on Tuesday.
The Fillies returned home on Saturday entertaining Slaton and will travel to Idalou on Tuesday.
