Over 78 million ballots have been cast so far in 47 states and the District of Columbia, including early in-person and mail-in voting. Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, Election Day will finally arrive after a season filled with campaign speeches, promises, and public debate.
In Texas, nearly half of the electorate has already voted; however, voter turnout there is not following the same upward trend seen in other states. While more than 78 million ballots have already been cast nationwide, Texas has seen almost half of its electorate participate in the voting process.
Four years ago, Texas had 16,955,519 registered voters, and that number has now increased to 18,623,931—an increase of 1,668,412 registered voters. However, early voting and mail-in ballot returns indicate that Texas is not experiencing the same level of turnout as in 2020.
As of the last day for early voting, Friday, November 1, 2024, the Texas Secretary of State reported that there have been 9,056,283 cumulative in-person and mail-in voters. In comparison, during the same timeframe four years ago, on Friday, October 30, 2020, there were 9,702,263 voters. This reflects a difference of 645,980 voters, meaning there are nearly 650,000 fewer cumulative in-person and mail voters compared to four years ago, despite having 1.6 million more registered voters.
The majority of the decrease in cumulative in-person and mail voters is attributed to ballot-by-mail voters, with a reduction of 590,254 from 2020 to 2024. Additionally, in-person early voting across the state has fallen by 55,726.
Terry County has mirrored these state trends. In Terry County, the total number of cumulative in-person and mail voters for 2024 is 2,587, which represents a decrease of 292 from 2020.
It’s important to note that ballot-by-mail submissions will be accepted until the day after the election, as long as the ballot is postmarked by 7:00 PM on November 5, 2024. Military ballots sent by mail are granted additional time for submission.
