Early voting for Primaries is done… how’d it go?

Early voting is over so that means tomorrow, Tuesday, March 5, 2024, is the only day that you can cast your vote. The State of Texas Primary Election Day will be held tomorrow with several other states in what is dubbed as Super Tuesday. According to Real Clear Politics average polling, Former President Trump is polling 70% better than Nikki Hailey at 82% Trump to Hailey’s 12%. The National average is 78.7% for Trump and 15.3% for Hailey. Of course, nobody will know the real results until Tuesday night.

Over 625,000 more Republican voters cast early votes in the primaries versus the Democrats. This could show a lack of enthusiasm for the Democratic Party in the Texas Primary. Also, it appears like there is an average of 6.8% of registered voters who voted in the Republican Primary which is more than half of the 3.3% voting in the Democrat Primary. Across the state, Republican early voting turnout was 14% higher than in 2020.

Although, statewide, the GOP early votes were higher, that was not the case in Terry County, as early voting saw less than it did in the 2020 Primary Election. In 2020 there were 1,086 Republican votes and 81 Democratic votes, which totaled 1,167. In the final early vote for this Primary Election (2024), there were 748 Republican votes and 28 Democrat votes totaling 776. That is a 33.5% decrease in early voter turnout from four years ago.

Breaking down the early voting by party and precinct, the southeast portion of Terry County brought in the most early votes. That portion is Precinct 101 of Terry County, which holds the majority of District 5 in the City of Brownfield. In Precinct 101 there were four Democrat votes and 397 Republican votes. In Precinct 201 there were five Democrat votes and 79 Republican votes. In Precinct 202, which encompasses the City of Meadow, there were zero Democrat votes and 18 Republican votes. In Precinct 301, there were 11 Democrat votes and 131 Republican votes. In Precinct 401, there were eight Democrat votes, and 107 Republican votes, and in Precinct 402, which encompasses the City of Wellman, there were zero Democrat votes and 16 Republican votes. There have been 51 of the 58 ballot-by-mail ballots that have been returned.
