On October 31st, a combined JV/Freshman Mustang football team travelled to Kermit to take on the JV Yellowjackets.  The Mustangs were the ones doing the scaring, coming away with a 34-2 victory.

The scoring started for the Mustangs after forcing a Kermit punt to start the game. The offense drove 95 yards down the field, with Ashton Galvan scoring on a QB run from 20 yards out to put the Mustangs on the board. The PAT was unsuccessful, giving the Mustangs a 6-0 lead.

Following an interception by Caleb O’Boyle, Galvan found Ernesto Martinez in the end zone for a 20-yard TD completion. Zach Perez converted the 2-point try, and the Mustangs took a 14-0 lead into the half.

The 2nd half saw the Mustangs defense continue to dominate, and scores were added by Galvan on a 2-yard run, and Victor Villegas on a 10 yard run. Junior Carmona was good on 1 of 2 PAT kicks, and after 3 quarters, the Mustangs led 27-0.

The 4th quarter saw the Mustangs give up a safety after a bad snap, giving Kermit their only points of the game, followed by the Mustangs adding their final score of the contest on a 70 yard catch and run from Galvan to Villegas. Carmona’s PAT was good, finishing the scoring at 34-2.

Defensively, the Mustangs played very well, forcing 4 turnovers. Fumbles were recovered by Rafe Harrel and Fabian Tercero, and interceptions were made by O’Boyle and Elias Villalobos.

Harrel and Daniel Zurita led the squad with 9 tackles each, followed by Jayden Dominguez and Villegas with 5 each. Others helping the defensive effort were Jaden Lopez, and Zach Perez with 4 tackles each.

Offensively, the Mustangs rolled up 396 total yards, with 218 of those coming on the ground. Villegas was the leading rusher with 108 yards and 1 score on 20 carries, followed by Galvan with 68 on 8 carries and 2 scores. Desmond Mendoza chipped in 45 yards on 4 carries, along with Landen Wright gaining 6 on 3 carries, Perez with 1 on 3 carries. Victor Escalante and Alec Martinez each had 1 rushing attempt as well.

Galvan was 9-21 for 178 yards passing with 2 scores.  Villegas had 3 catches for 86 yards and a score. Perez had 2 catches for 47; Ernesto Martinez had 2 for 29 and a TD, and Zurita had 2 catches for 16 yards to round out the Mustang effort.

The win gives the JV a final record of 5-3 for the season.

“These young men did a tremendous job representing Denver City this season,” Coach Steve Taylor noted. “Give them a pat on the back when you get the opportunity. We appreciate the continued support of DCISD athletics!!”
