December is going to be such a fun month for Brownfield and Terry County. There will be lots of things going on, lots of giving and you certainly don’t want to miss any of it!
On December 1, the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the 10th Annual Keep the Cheer Here. This annual holiday shopping event puts the emphasis on “Shopping Local.” The event goes from 5 – 8 p.m. There are at least 14 businesses taking part in this event and you will have the opportunity to win prizes, too. So, do not miss this Thursday evening shopping event.
Businesses participating include AdVenture Marketing, ACES, BIDCorp, Brownfield Floral, Dusty Creek Gifts and More, Forever Nutrition, Gemini Engraving, Just By Chance Clothing, Nelson Pharmacy and Gifts, OoohLaLa, The Main Place, The Terry County Heritage Museum, The Triple D Winery, and Whitehouse Parker. Others may join in as well, so look for updated lists as the event gets closer.
On December 5, the First Annual Christmas Electric Light Parade will take place. This is a new event for Terry County and was the brainchild of several city leaders. Justice of the Peace Angie Garza, Brownfield Chamber of Commerce, Brownfield Police Department, and the City of Brownfield and Brownfield Industrial Development, plus TownTalk are all official sponsors.
Residents, businesses, and organizations are encouraged to decorate their vehicles with Christmas lights and decorations. Pull trailers with inflatables on them! Get out your golf cart or your ATV and get them lit up for the holidays. Due to the fact that the parade will be longer than normal, and is on a state highway for much of the route, no walkers will be allowed. All vehicles have to be able to go at least 5 mph. Church groups, civic clubs, businesses, schools, and individuals are encouraged to participate in this parade. Be creative and make it fun!
The parade will begin at the amphitheater in the park and will go around the park to come out on Seagraves Road. It will then travel down Lubbock Road to Broadway, where it will turn west. It will then travel west on Broadway to 6th Street where it will turn north and then go back east up Main Street all the way to 2nd Street where it will turn back south and then west again on Broadway to end up at the Courthouse. (If this is confusing, there are maps available.) The idea is to take the parade past as many businesses as possible. The route was done by City Manager Jeff Davis and Police Chief Tony Serbantez.
Santa and Mrs. Claus will be at the very end of the parade and will arrive at the Courthouse and greet the children there. There will be hot chocolate and cookies there, as well as possibly some carolers. The organizers are asking that no one else have a live “Santa” in the parade, as there should be only one Santa on this special night.
There will be prizes awarded for the best decorated individual vehicle, business vehicle, and organization vehicle. There will also be an additional prize for the best-decorated business along the route. So, get up there and get all your lights on your business and get those windows decorated. Organizers want this to be a very festive evening of fun for everyone that can be held year after year.
To be in the parade, you need to go by the Chamber of Commerce and fill out a form. There is no cost to enter. Be at the Amphitheater by 5:30 to get in line. No candy throwing will be allowed because this is a nighttime parade and there is too much danger of someone getting run over in the street chasing candy down.
If you don’t want to participate, come join the fun along the parade route. It should be a great night for everyone. If you would like to help light up the park along the parade route as it begins, Davis stated that people could wrap the trunks of the trees and the City would provide the power for these. They will stay lit throughout the holiday season. Contact Davis at City Hall for more information on this.
The next night, December 6, will be the Christmas Home Tour, called “Home for the Holidays.” This is being sponsored by the Chamber. Tickets are $10 and are available at the Chamber or at any board member.
Homes toured will be those of Caryn Caballero at 1203 East Warren, and also Gary Brashears home, at 1702 Carter Drive. Also on the tour will be First Baptist Church, at 219 West Main. First Baptist will be having a huge nativity display in the Activities Building.
Finally, Brownfield Floral will be the last stop with refreshments being served. Also at Brownfield Floral, a fully decorated Christmas tree will be raffled off. It will be delivered to your home and decorated. Raffle tickets are $5 and are also available at the Chamber or from any board member.
This event will begin at 5 p.m. and the Christmas tree drawing will be held at 7:15 p.m. You do not have to be present to win.
It’s that time of the year again when people begin to string out their Christmas lights and decorations when all the Christmas festivities are being planned and so forth, that also means it’s time for the Brownfield & Terry County Goodfellows Christmas Campaign to begin as well. The Brownfield & Terry County Goodfellows actually began as a local organization through the Lions Club years ago by volunteers, to provide a Christmas meal and toys to less fortunate families in Brownfield and Terry County.
Years ago, the Terry County Sheriff’s Dept. supported the Prison Fellowship Angel Tree project which would receive donated toys for children who had a parent(s) incarcerated in the prison system. Leaders of both the Goodfellows and Angel Tree realized it would be better to join forces so that there was no confusion as to which organization would give to a family. So a few years ago they combined and are now called Brownfield & Terry County Goodfellows where Brownfield City Manager Jeff Davis and Terry County Sheriff Tim Click are “Co-Chief Goodfellows”.
Last year, the Brownfield & Terry County Goodfellows was able to assist 166 families and provided 714 toys to over 357 children aged 12 and under. Of the 166 families, 15 of those were in the County. According to Davis, groceries are a great expense to the organization with almost $4000 spent on food last year, and with inflation at a 40-year high, they anticipate there will be a huge increase. Goodfellows also spent $4754 on toys for the children of Terry County in 2021, and like the food costs, there will most likely be an increase in those as well.
Also, Goodfellows was able to obtain a Texas Tech basketball signed by the Red Raiders Head Basketball Coach and Brownfield’s very own Mark Adams. The Chief Goodfellows are in a competition to see who can sell the most raffle tickets for the signed basketball. Each ticket is a dollar and the drawing will be held at the City of Brownfield Christmas party on Thursday, December 15, 2022. You can find the Jeff Davis or Sheriff Click to purchase tickets.

And there is still more.
The Reindeer Run will be held on December 10, at 11 a.m. beginning at Dr. Kelly Riley’s office on The Square. The run will be an official 5K, but you can also run/walk a shorter fun route. Come dressed in your best Christmas costume and take part in the fun. Prizes will be awarded and medals will be given out.
Then, finally, the Holiday Little Miss Pageant will be held on December 15 at The Triple D. These little girls are working hard and selling tickets to earn the crown. If you see them out, support them! Those running for this title are Kespen Germany, Zayleigh Whittenburg, Dynae Tijerina, Gisell Andazola, Aminah Kelly, Chloe Warren, Elyana Dominguez, and Jordyn Taylor.
Busy, busy, busy. And this does not even include band concert, choir concert, church programs, basketball, and all the other things that go on during December leading up to that special day!
