DC Mustangs Split Games at Andrews Tournament

The Mustangs split their four games at the recently completed always tough Andrews tournament.

They recorded wins over Lamesa 54-50 and Lubbock High 41-36 before coming up on the short end of scoreboard against Borger 58-49 and host Andrews 52-50.

In the Lamesa game the Mustangs were holding on to a 18-17 lead at the end of the first quarter before falling behind 36-28 at intermission. They regrouped at halftime to tie things up at 41-41 entering the final quarter of play. A 13-9 final quarter accounted for the 54-50 final score.

Joseph Ramirez and Jacob Freeman paced the Mustangs with 12 and 11 points respectively. Ferny Vega added nine points, Elias Yanez and Enrique Banuelas both had four points, Anthony Anderson had three and Andres Ortega added two.

The Mustangs jumped on top 10-8 at the end of the first quarter before falling behind 21-16 at halftime. They closed the gap in the third quarter but still trailed 30-29 entering the final eight minutes of play. A 12-6 difference in the fourth quarter gave the Mustangs the 41-36 win.

Seven players entered the scoring column led by Elias Yanez and Aiden Wells with eight points each. Erik Escobar added seven, Jacob Freeman had six, Anthony Anderson and Elias Yanez both tossed in three points, and Enrique Banuelas had two points.

Against Borger the Mustangs were up 15-13 at the end of the first quarter before falling behind 36-28 at halftime. Borger upped that lead to 50-37 entering the final quarter. The Mustangs did win the fourth quarter 12-8, but it wasn’t enough to make up the 13 point deficit.

Elias Yanez led the Mustangs with 18 points while Jacob Freeman was also in double digits with 14 points. Andres Ortega finished with eight points, Enrique Banuelas added six and Aiden Wells finished with two points.

In the narrow loss 52-50 to Andrews the Mustangs were down 9-4 at the end of the first quarter before tying things up at 20-20 at intermission. The Mustangs were holding on to a 35-34 lead heading into the final quarter where they were outscored by the hometown team 18-15 for the final score.

Jacob Freeman and Elias Yanez paced the Mustangs with 13 and 12 points each. Erik Escobar netted seven points, Ferny Vega had five points, Aiden Wells and Anthony Anderson both had four points, Joseph Ramirez tossed in three points and Andres Ortega finished with two points.

The Mustangs traveled to Ft. Stockton on Tuesday and then will take a short break before returning to action on December 26 when they take place in the Littlefield tournament.
