Well here we are in week 6 of Texas High School Football and it does not get any easier for the Brownfield Cubs as the Muleshoe Mules bring their 5-0 record into town for a classic 3A football game, and there is really no love loss between these teams. This game has kind of become a new rivalry between both, especially with Brownfield because the past two seasons they have played three times, twice in Bi-District and once in the regular season. Losing 21-17 in Bi-District in 2021, losing 39-37 at Muleshoe in week six in the 2022 season, and losing again to the Mules in Bi-District 47-37 in November 2022. Don’t forget, the Cubs were up on the Mules 24-0 with 7:54 left in the 2nd quarter, and Muleshoe ended up scoring 40 unanswered points to lead at halftime 40-24.

There are two teams in common that the Cubs and Mules have played and they are Littlefield and Tulia. The Mules beat both teams, Littlefield in week one 48-20 and Tulia in week four 61-7. The Cubs beat Tulia in week two 40-14 and lost last week to Littlefield in week five 49-13.
Brownfield has averaged 79 yards rushing in the past five games and an average of 288 passing yards, with a total average of 367 offensive yards a game. Muleshoe on the other hand is racking up the offensive yards by averaging 277 yards rushing, and 216 yards passing with an average of 493 total offensive yards a game.
On the scoring side, Brownfield has put up 158 points in five games which is about an average of 32 points a game. The Cubs have allowed 162 points in five games which is about 32 points a game as well. The Mules have earned 252 points in five games which averages about 50 points a game and they are allowing only 12 points a game.
The Cub’s defense is going to have to step up their run defense. In the two games Brownfield lost, Roosevelt and Littlefield, both teams kept the ball on the ground. Roosevelt had 336 rushing yards and Littlefield had 272. With Muleshoe averaging 277 yards on the ground, Brownfield will have their hands full. This will be the toughest team that the Cubs will have met up with this season.
Coach Brantley said, “This is the best team we have faced so far. They are well coached and are very well versed in their schematics. I believe if we can put a complete game together we will have a good chance, it is up to us.”
