The Terry County Commissioner Court held a special meeting on Monday, March 31, 2025, to discuss and consider implementing a “Burn Ban” for Terry County. According to data from the West Texas Mesonet weather station, there has been only 0.09 inches (nine hundredths of an inch) of precipitation in Terry County since the beginning of January 2025. Additionally, the US Drought Monitor indicates that approximately 95% of Terry County is experiencing severe drought, which is classified as the middle stage of drought severity. There are five stages of drought in total: D0 – Abnormally Dry; D1 – Moderate Drought; D2 – Severe Drought; D3 – Extreme Drought; & D4 – Exceptional Drought.
