Best Flowers for a Beautiful Fall Garden

Most days, I don’t get home till about 5 or 6:30. In my home, we pride ourselves on all of the different types of flowers we have planted in our garden, and as fall starts to roll around the corner, its the perfect time to start thinking about what flowers to start planting in the fall season and what flowers are at their absoloute peak during the fall.

During my research, I found many different benefits of growing flowers during the fall season, such as less heat stress from the summer sun, keeping these flowers protected, more rainfall and humidity, making the plants absorb nutrients better, they won’t be fighting the growth of weeds, and because it’s cooler, fewer insects will be prone to eating them.

Many different types of flowers are great to grow in the fall, such as pansies, chrysanthemums, asters, sedums, and tulips. Pansies are best planted mid-September to early October and are usually in full bloom just in time for spring. Another great flower to plant in the fall is tulips because they thrive in cooler temperatures and need at least 10-16 months before they bloom.

Then there are flowers planted in spring that sprout in fall and add a little color to the blanket of leaves covering your backyard. Chrysanthemums are inexpensive flowers usually planted in early spring but peaking in fall; they are also popular in floral arrangements and even in the mums made for homecoming festivities every year. Asters are best to grow during the spring, but you can also plant them in the fall. Like chrysanthemums, asters bloom in the fall and add beautiful shades of blue, pink, and purple. Sedums are a part of the succulent family, so if you are looking for a more bush-like flower, these are perfect to plant during the spring, but provide a beautiful, bush-like plant that is very easy to maintain.

Every flower listed is the perfect flower to incorporate into your garden this fall season. You can plant tulips and pansies as seedlings within the next month. As for Chrysanthemums, asters, sedums, and tulips, they are about to be in full bloom, so it is best to get them from a local nursery or store soon, so when they do reach full bloom, they will be planted just in time for you to witness their peak.

Although we have been working on our garden for years, every season we try to prepare for the next in any way we can. If you have been interested in starting a garden but you don’t know when to start, these flowers will prepare you for a beautiful fall season, and if you plant the tulips and pansies, they will sprout just in time for that sunny spring season.
