Tuesday, May 28, 2024, is Texas Primary Runoff Election Day, and Terry County has one primary runoff. In the March 5, 2024, Democrat and Republican Primary, one race had three candidates in the Republican Terry County Commissioner Precinct 1 race. The current office holder of precinct 1 commissioner is Mike Swain, who has held this position since January 1, 2009, and has decided to retire at the end of December 2024. This decision caused no incumbent to seek reelection.

In the March Primary Precinct 1 Commissioner race, Myron Bovkoon, JR Cudd, and Manuel Macias were all three vying for this position. Because no Democrat ran in the Precinct 1 primary, whoever wins the Republican side will become the new commissioner on January 1, 2025. There were 613 total votes cast in the March 5, 2024, Primary with Bovkoon receiving the plurality of votes of 300 or 48.94%, JR Cudd coming in second with 186 votes or 30.34% and Macias getting 127 votes or 20.27%.

Bovkoon could not amass the 50% plus one vote to avoid a runoff. According to the Terry County Joint Elections Office, there were 253 early votes in the runoff. There is a history of lower voter turnout when there is a runoff which is usually about one-third less. Voting began for the one Republican Primary Runoff between Bovkoon and Cudd this morning at 7:00 a.m. at the Coleman Party House in Coleman Park.

NOTE: If a voter voted in the Democrat Primary, they cannot vote in the Republican Primary Runoff. If a voter DID NOT vote in the regular primary, they can vote in the primary runoff.
