Making a Difference

Mother’s Day is upon us! God knew what He was doing when He gave us mothers! I saw a cartoon recently that was depicting a mother taking a day off. In her place was a chef, maid, chauffeur, nurse, teacher, coach, clown, preacher, and a fortune teller! It was not wrong. Mothers do so many things, and these days, most mothers also work a full time job.

I miss my mom. She was always such a funny person. She could find humor in most every situation. When we were all much younger, she would play outside with us. We played a lot of baseball. Debbie and I against her. She called the game “Scrub.” If you hit the ball, you ran straight to where second base would be and then try to run home before the other team had the ball back. I don’t know if anyone else ever played Scrub or if she made it up! But, I guess with a one person team playing a two person team, a new game had to evolve.

My mom taught me about tithing. When we were little, she always gave us a quarter every Sunday for the offering. When we grew older and began to work, she taught us about giving that first 10 percent back to God. I can so clearly remember her saying, “You can’t outlive God.” And “If you think you don’t have the money to tithe, you don’t have the money not to tithe!” She was very serious about her tithe to the church.

One of my special memories of my mom is her in Cottage Village, with a few of the girls who worked there sitting on the floor and on the bed as she told them about her Jesus. I won’t ever forget the looks on their faces as she just shared from her heart what Jesus had done in her life and what He could do in theirs. So many people think when they get old, there is nothing left for them to do for God. My mother was well into her 90s and sharing from her heart what she knew to be true about God and His love for us, and His gift of His Son.

If your mother is still living, I will tell you this, she would love to hear from you. She loves to hear your voice say “I love you.” She would love for you to put your phone in your pocket or turn it off, and just sit and visit. She would love to hear you ask if she needs anything done, without her having to ask. She would love to just get to see your face.

Mothers are one of God’s greatest gifts to us! Spend time with yours, if you can. If she is already gone, thank God for her and the life she lived.

Mothers make a difference!
