BISD New Athletic Director updates school board

The Brownfield ISD School Board met in a regularly scheduled meeting Monday night, March 25, 2024, and a new Athletic Director was named and reported to the school board. Before the Board moved to the agenda items, there would be an invocation, pledges, and public comments (there were no public comments). The Board moved to the superintendent reports which involve recognitions, athletics, monthly financials, enrollment, and general information.

The Board went on to recognize the Spelling Bee participants in order of first place to sixth place, 1st Juan Lira, 2nd Mario Guerro, 3rd Adrianna Contreras, 4th Alexander Williams, 5th Emma Martinez 6th Eva Peters Froese. Next, the Board recognized the BMS-Civil Air Patrol Charter Members and they are Texas 818. Next, the Board recognized the Student of the Month, BHS student Jazzlyn Garcia. Then recognitions went to the Employee’s of the Month, Colonial Heights-Jennifer Arguellez, Oak Grove-Jaci Zingerman, Middle School- Rosa Garza, and High School- Henry Perez.

Moving on to the athletic portion of the superintendent report, Assistant Superintendent Melissa Vera said, “As of today, we did name a new athletic director for Brownfield ISD. Our new athletic director will be Art Ontiveros… he will serve in that role in addition to an assistant principal at Brownfield Middle School beginning next year.” (2024-2025 school year) Ontiveros stood at the podium to say to the Board, “Thank y’all for trusting me in this new endeavor… it’s not a new one for me, but a new one for here.” Ontiveros went on to give the athletics report. With the news of Ontiveros moving to the AD spot and moving from the principal position at Brownfield Middle School to assistant principal, Ashley Venable will move up as principal of Brownfield Middle School. According to Superintendent Chris Smith, Taheric Brantley, the current athletic director will finish out the school year as AD, and return to the 2024-2025 school year as head football coach.

Next, the Board received the current enrollment numbers. There is a total of 1672 students enrolled as of Monday, March 25, 2024, or week 29, which is two students less than a year ago this time. Colonial Heights has 136, down 13 students from last year. Oak Grove has a total of 676 from Kindergarten to Fifth grade and is down seven students from last year. Brownfield Middle School has 356, down six students from last year. Brownfield Education Center has 52 students and is up by one student, and Brownfield High School has 452 which is up by 23 students.

The Board moved on to the financials. According to BISD CFO Ronald Kuehler shows that the school district is on track. Of the $26,190,836 budget, 39% has been expended which is $10,241,802 as of the end of February. Kuehler also showed what the projected fund balance will be at the end of the 2023-2024 fiscal year (August 31, 2024) which is $10,210,791.

The 2024-2025 school calendar was then presented to the Board. The school district will begin for the 2024-2025 school year on August 14, 2024, and the last day of school will be May 22, 2025. There will be a total of 30 student and staff holiday days, which include five for Thanksgiving, 10 for Christmas Break, and five for spring break.

The final agenda item of the evening was to approve the professional administrative term contracts and approve the employment agreements contract recommendations. The Board approved the contracts and agreements which are listed below.
