Brownfield Lady Cubs & Runnin’ Cubs

The Lady Cubs had a solid week last week by winning both district games. Brownfield went north to take Friona and returned home with a 56-27 win. Next, they took on Muleshoe at home on Senior Night winning 44-33 and notching a spot in the playoffs. Maya Martinez led the way against Muleshoe with 13 points and Amery Puada had 10. The Lady Cubs are 7-4 in district and tied with Denver City.

Tomorrow night, Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, the Lady Cubs will travel over to DC for their final district game of the season, and probably the most important one as well. If Brownfield wins, they are district runner-ups and will go into the playoffs as the second seed from District 3-3A. If they lose to DC, then they’ll be tied for third with Lamesa, depending if Lamesa beats Friona, which they won over the Squaws on Jan. 12 77-18. If Brownfield and Lamesa tie, then there will be a seeding played in a neutral site.

The Runnin’ Cubs got back on track last week winning over Friona 75-36 and Muleshoe 74-44. They are now 9-1 in district and have solidified a spot in the playoffs. Jo Jo Carrillo scored 22 points against Muleshoe and is only 14 points away from hitting 1000 career points. However, Carrillo will share the ball and wants to win, so those 14 points might wait after they play Denver City tomorrow night, we’ll see.

The Runnin’ Cubs will finish their district season on Friday when they travel up to Dimmitt. Brownfield and Littlefield are currently tied for first, the Runnin’ Cubs at 9-1 and the Wildcats at 8-1. Littlefield has three games left which is Muleshoe, tomorrow night at Muleshoe, they beat them the first time 53-42, then Denver City at DC on Friday night, which they beat them the first time 73-25, and then Dimmitt next Tuesday, which they beat them the first time 81-44. So if both Brownfield and Littlefield win out, there will be a seeding game on the line, TBA.

District 3-3A Standings

Meadow Lady Broncos & Broncos

Last week with the Lady Broncos win over Morton, they fell right into third place and got a playoff spot. Tomorrow night the Lady Broncos will play their last district game of the season against Anton and it’s Senior Night. The last time they played, Meadow won 33-26. Anton would like to notch one more win before the season over them, so they’ll play tough. One good thing is if Meadow does lose, there are no seeding scenarios. Morton finished last week and was 4-6 in district sitting in fourth. Anton is 2-7 and cannot gain extra games to catch up.

The Broncos have seen better days, however with the very young team they’ve had this season, they are looking bright into the future. With Morton and Whiteface setting out to class 2A, this will be a help in district next season. So don’t count them when basketballs roll out on the hardwood next season. The last time Meadow played Anton, the Bulldogs won 50-34. But tomorrow is a new day and the Broncos are very hungry for a win, specifically a district win. The Broncos finish the week at home against Whiteface.

District 7-1A Standings

Wellman-Union Lady Cats & Wildcats

The Lady Cats take on Grady at Grady tomorrow night. Grady won the first meeting. Right now the Lady sits at 3-5 in district and tomorrow night’s game was supposed to be the last district game. However, last Friday, Wellman-Union CISD postponed that game due to a student’s death. That game will be played this Friday at Wellman-Union, tipoff at 6:30 p.m. Loop forfeited the first game, so this Friday will be the first time they have played. If Loop wins, then there will be a seeding game between the two for fourth place and fourth seed in the playoffs.

The Wildcats still have a couple of games left of the season. Like their cross-county rivals of Meadow, this boy’s team is very young. They have played hard all season and look to upset Grady tomorrow night. It can happen, we see it all the time. Unlike the girls, the Wildcats will not play Loop Friday night, they have already forfeited the game due to no post season implications.
