There is a story from the Bible that is well known, and it is the story of David and Goliath. Now Goliath, a giant who most scholars say was about 9 and a half feet tall was a Philistine that was taunting his enemies the Israelites. David, the youngest and smallest son of Jesse, who was out tending to sheep was called to take down Goliath. Nobody else could because they were in battle with the Philistines or they were fearful of Goliath. So… David a shepherd boy came to the battle line and told King Saul he would take care of Goliath. Of course, Saul basically told David, you’re too small, too weak, and just a kid. David told King Saul, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” That’s just what he did. He used a slingshot with a nice stone and hit Goliath right in the forehead knocking him down! The rest is history.

If there ever is a time for the Brownfield Cubs Football team to have a David moment, it’s tomorrow night when they take on the 5th-ranked Bushland Falcons in a Class 3A DI Bi-District Championship game. Bushland comes into Thursday night’s game 9-1, with their only loss to Class 3A DII 2nd ranked Canadian who is 10-0. The Cubs are coming off two wins, one was somewhat easy and the other came down to the last second to win. If the Cubs had beaten Slaton by 11 points, they would be playing Shallowater instead, which is not having the greatest season. However, they get to take on the Falcons who have won their last seven bi-district games.

Bushland is averaging 46 points a game and allowing 19 points a game. We can’t find the stats on Bushland, however, with that type of scoring, we are sure they are averaging between 400-500 offensive yards a game. Brownfield on the other hand has struggled on offense. The Cubs are averaging almost 29 points a game and giving up 34 points a game. Bushland has 20 players who are 6’0 foot or taller with an average of 193 pounds. Brownfield has 7 players 6’0 or taller with an average of 213 pounds. Bushland also has more speed than Brownfield with their runningback Easton Fuentes who is 6’1, 220 lbs, and runs a 4.5. Also two wide receivers, Tanner Adams who is 6’0, 160 lbs, and runs a 4.4, and Max Rodriguez who is 6’0, 160 lbs and runs a 4.6. Don’t forget their QB Dawson Jaco who is 6’1, 165 lbs, and runs a 4.7. Brownfield has QB JJ Martinez who is 5’9, 165 lbs, and runs a 4.8), tight end Kaden Wise who is 6’0, 185 lbs, and runs a 4.7, and wide receiver JoJo Carrillo who is 5’7, 160 lbs and runs a 4.6.
The Cubs are going to need to play their game. The defense will need another night like they had against Slaton last week to keep the ball out of the hands of the Falcons. They must hold on to the ball and take the hits as they come. Remember in 2021 when Stanton shocked #3 Childress winning 39-34 in bi-district. So… it can be done.
Brownfield Cubs vs Bushland Falcons, Thursday, Nov. 8, 2023, kickoff @ 7:00 p.m. @ Greg Sherwood Memorial Stadium in Plainview TX.
