Lady Cats Volleyball… Locked and Loaded

by Eric

The Wellman-Union Lady Cats Volleyball team found some extra success last season after winning a bi-district trophy, upending Ft. Elliot in five sets, then fell to Van Horn in four sets in the Area Round. One thing about the Lady Cats, they would love to see a district title, however, their district rival Klondike is in the way of them earning that district championship. The Lady Cougars made it all the way to the state semifinals, and even though they lost three starters to graduation, three other starters are coming back from that state semifinal run.

Fast forward to a new season, and Coach Hogue has a lot of optimism about this year’s squad. The team brings back five ladies who received district honors last season, Seniors, Haylee Boshears and Tina Friesen, Junior, Katy Rameriz, and Sophomores, Mariah Cochran & Rowann Baker. Also, the Lady Cats have freshman Jerzee Harlan who will be a handful for their opponents.

Coach Hogue said, “I am running a team of 12 girls. This group is young, and their energy is contagious.”

The Lady Cats will be led by the two seniors or team leaders Haylee and Tina. They have become great Middle Blockers. Both of their presence at the net will be felt and they are strong players that make things happen.

Coach Hogue went on to say, “I am excited to watch my setters grow and run the show. Rowann Baker is coming back with Jerzee Harlan helping her set. Both girls are fireballs on the court.”

According to Coach Hogue, this year’s Outside hitters are Mariah Cochran and Kloe Gunter. Both girls are great at placing the ball where it needs to be to get the Lady Cats some points. Wellman-Union’s Defensive Specialist (DS) and Libero will be played by Katy Rameriz and Azayla Mercado. Both girls will do a great job working the back line and keeping the ball from dropping in-bounds.

To round out the rest of the team, Coach Hogue has added the team, Micaela Escobar, Mattie Seymour, Alyssa Cavazos, and Sophia Rameriz. “They are all valuable players in their positions. It’s a great group of girls, all with a great chemistry on the court. It’s a fun team to watch.” said Coach Hogue.
