Although Terry County has officially received 7.15 inches of rainfall from January 1 to June 22, 2023, portions of the county are still under drought. According to the US Drought Monitor, the southern portion of Terry County is experiencing moderate drought. About two-thirds of Terry County is still considered “abnormally dry”. The last measurable amount of rainfall was on June 8, 2023, with 1.34 inches. Since then the temperatures have gone from moderate to three-digit temperatures for three days in a row 104, 103, & 105, and for the next eight days, the temperatures will range from 100 to 107. For the next eight days, rain chances are very slim. If the weather continues as it has since June 8, then Terry County will start jumping into more unfavorable drought intensities.

According to Texas AgriLife, all the rainfall over the past few months has reversed hay production and grazing outlooks for Texas producers. This will also help the care and operation of hay meadows and pastures from past seasons, so moving forward it will bring higher yields. The same with cotton. With producers being able to plant, the heat will certainly help. But again, for dry land cotton rain will be needed soon for good yields come harvest.
