Life does not always go as planned. We have this picture of how things are going to be and then somehow, that is not what actually happens. It is the time of year when high school seniors are being asked, “What are you going to do when you graduate? What are you going to be?” Most have a ready answer, but very few have an actual clue what all is lying before them.
I know when I was a Senior I thought I might join the Air Force (Daddy said no.), I also thought I might like to get into politics (changed my mind quickly!). Another thought I had that haunts me to this day was doing something in the concrete world. Seriously, I remember us traveling when I was around 16, and I was looking out the window thinking, “Man! They use concrete everywhere! That is what I should get into.” I went home and looked in encyclopedias (the internet of the 70s) and learned all I could. But, I never actually ventured that direction. If I had, I would be a wealthy woman today, I am sure! But things do not always go as planned.
In Proverbs 16, Solomon writes, “A man’s mind plans his way (as he journeys through life), but the Lord directs his steps and makes them firm.” What this says to me is that I can make all the plans I want, but ultimately my best plan is to follow God. We are to look to God to guide us in all our steps. Many decisions are made during times of emotion. A wise person does not make decisions like that. You step away from the situation, talk with God, then with His guidance, you choose the correct path. God has a plan for all our lives.
He has a plan for my whole life and He has a plan for this day. There are many things that happen in our lives that may not necessarily be a part of God’s plan, but He knew that day was coming and He has a plan from that point. Nothing is a surprise to God. But, to the high school _seniors today, He made you with a purpose and a plan. To those of us who are senior citizens, He made you with a purpose and a plan! This is true for all of us.
As our kiddos embark on a new way of life – college, career, military, whatever it is, remember to pray for them as they find their way in this world. And if you are the parent of a kiddo who just graduated from Pre-K, lead them to know the One who has the map for their lives. Start today teaching them about God and His plan for their lives.
Also in Proverbs, it says, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” Work like you are working for the Lord. Follow His path for your life. Commit your way to Him. It will make a difference!
