Candidates filing to run for political office in Counties and State-wide offices in Texas closed yesterday Dec. 13, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. The following candidates have officially filed to run for election in the upcoming Terry County Election Primary to be held on March 1, 2022.
In the Republican Primary there are four contested races:
For Terry County Commissioner Precinct 2, two candidates filed in the Republican Primary for this position are Incumbent Kirby Keesee and Richard Cavasos.
For Terry County Treasurer two candidates have filed in the Republican Primary for the position, which is Andrea Perry & Tessa Clark.
For Terry County Justice of the Peace three candidates have filed in the Republican Primary which includes Incumbent Judge Angie Garza, challengers David Cox, and Merlene Janet “MJ” Harrell.
For the Terry County Judge position, three candidates filed in the Republican Primary are Geoff Cooper, Larry Gilbreath, & Tony Serbantez. There is no incumbent in this race because the current County Judge, JD Butch Wagner will retire on December 31, 2022.
Others who filed in the Republican Primary will not have a challenger in the primary and will not have a challenger in the November 2022 General Election are Terry County Clerk, Incumbent Kim Carter, and Tiffany O’Briant who filed for District Clerk. Current District Clerk Paige Lindsey will retire on December 31, 2022. These two candidates will automatically become the respective officeholders because they had no challenger in the Primary and General Election.
Terry County Commissioner for Precinct 4, Incumbent Ernesto Elizardo will not have a challenger in the Primary, however, in the November 2022 General Election, he will be challenged by Democrat Shorty Martinez. Martinez does not have a challenger in the Democrat Primary.
Scott Jackson has filed as a Democrat candidate for the Terry County Judge position. Jackson will not be challenged in the Democrat Primary, however, he will face the winner of the Republican candidate for Terry County Judge in the November 2022 General Election.
The first day of early voting will begin Monday, February 14, 2022, and end on Friday, February 25, 2022. Primary Election Day is set for Tuesday, March 1, 2022. Also, the Terry County Elections Office will be holding a Candidate’s Class on Wednesday, December 15, in the Elections Office. The class will begin at 6 p.m. Krystal Valentin, Elections Office Administrator will go over the Terry County election process and other info candidates may need to know. Krystal stated it should last around 45 minutes, depending on questions, etc. All official candidates are encouraged to attend and The meeting is open to the public.
