A fire that caused perhaps more smoke than damage was reported at West Gin on Wednesday afternoon, December 8, just before 4 p.m.
The fire began in the motes, and was mostly contained there. For those that do not know, cotton motes are defined as cotton that does not need to go into a Grade A bale. It’s mostly just not as good quality fibers, for a simple explanation.
Most of the cotton motes in this area are taken to Wilson or to Hackberry. Some of it used for fireproof insulation, furniture stuffing, and some is used for money blend. Nothing goes to waste from cotton!
According to a spokesman from West Gin, one module sustained a small amount of damage but will be able to be ginned.
Esther Castaneda, Office Manager for West Gin stated, “Thank you to the Brownfield Fire & Rescue for their quick response and Brownfield Police Department for keeping everyone safe.”
The gin was up and running on Thursday morning.
