Cubs get the big W over Lamesa

The Brownfield Cubs were prepared. They had a great game plan. They knew what to expect, and they did a great job in their 41-22 victory over Lamesa. This win, along with the Shallowater win over Slaton, and the Denver City win over Kermit, set the stage for a third place Cubs team heading into the playoffs. Lamesa’s season is now finished.

The Cubs started off the scoring with a 15 yard run by QB Zarius Garcia. JD “Money” Vasquez was good for the extra point, making the score 7-0 early in the game. That would be the score at the end of the first, as the Cubs defense proved to be too much for the Lamesa running game, as well as passing game.

With four minutes left in the first half, Adriano “Slammer” Mireles fought his way into the endzone for another Cub score, JD was good for the extra point.

With just 55 seconds to play in the half, Lamesa was able to get across the goal line, which brought the halftime score to 14-7.

In the second half, plenty of miscues by the Cubs allowed Lamesa to threaten. A fumbled snap near the endzone led to a Lamesa TD. They went for two and were successful, taking their first and only lead of the night.

The Cubs quickly answered back as Kaydyn “K-Mo” Moore scampered down the field for a long run to the endzone, bringing the score to 20-15. This would be the score going into the fourth quarter.

With barely any time gone off the clock in the fourth quarter, Zarius would add another TD, but Lamesa was not done yet. They scored two minutes later, bringing the score to 27-22.

One more time Zarius called his own number and headed into the endzone, making the score 34-22, with just under five minutes to play.

The Cubs would score once more on a beautiful fighting run by Gage McPherson, with three minutes left to play. The Cubs were able to hold on and bring in the 41-22 victory.

Head Coach Aarrhon Flores stated, “I am so excited for this team. I have been saying all along, can’t wait to get to district. We knew we could compete. We played that tough preseason schedule for a reason. We are seeing lots of positive come out of this program, which spreads to the school and to the community.”

Cub favorite Patricio Garcia was able to get into the game for a few plays, which thrilled him, the crowd and his teammates. Patricio is a Senior this year and gives it his all 100% of the time. Even when he knows he is not likely to see playing time, he goes to practice and is a very vocal force on the sidelines.

The Cubs will now face Muleshoe on Thursday, November 11 at Littlefield for Bi-District. The Cubs would really like to bring home a gold ball this year, so plan to show up and support these guys. Flores stated, “We are ready to play in the playoffs. We know we can win some games in the post-season.”

This was Senior Night for the 10 Cub Seniors: Lane Bundy, Devin Hines, Zarius Garcia, Ivan Dominguez, Edward Morin, Patricio Garcia, Zayden Morin, Keyshawn Dever, and Austin Gunnels

The Cubs were 0-5 before district play began, and finished district with a 3-2 record.
