Texas Tech has added yet another junior college late addition to the 2020 class in safety Cameron White. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound defensive back from Northwest Mississippi Community College confirmed with Inside the Red Raiders on Saturday morning that he will be on campus by next weekend.
“The coaches and the support from them made it easy to choose them (Texas Tech),” White said. “I report June 5th and I’m just ready to ball.”
White recorded 55 tackles, two stops for loss and three pass breakups in 11 games last season at Northwest Mississippi. As a freshman in 2018, White tallied 27 tackles, one stop for loss, three interceptions, one forced fumble, six pass defenses and three pass breakups. He will have three years to play two seasons starting in the fall.
The three-star recruit is rated as the No. 78 overall junior college player in the country, the No. 7 safety in the nation and the No. 15 overall prospect in Mississippi for the 2020 class according to the 247Sports Composite, an average of the major recruiting service rankings.
White committed to Texas Tech without having visited due to the NCAA enforced recruiting dead period because of the coronavirus pandemic. Despite committing to the Red Raiders without visiting, White liked what he heard from the coaches and believes his versatility can add to the team.
“I grew up playing corner so my cover skills are sharp but when the coaches found out I was fast and can hit hard they moved me to safety,” White said. “What I’m going to bring to the table is a whole bunch of interceptions and big hits. I’m an all around player. You can put me on the sidelines (at corner), put me in the box, whatever the case may be because I’m used to it. I plan on coming to Texas Tech and making my mark there for sure.”
White was a highly recruited player out of Madison (MS) Central High School who signed with Ole Miss over reported offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Louisville, Southern Miss, Tulane, Marshall and South Alabama before having to go the junior college route.
He’s the third late junior college addition this month alone for Texas Tech joining Jason Lloyd, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end from California and Josh Davies-Balogun, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive end originally from Texas.
In all, Texas Tech has added seven junior college players this offseason as joining the three mentioned above are cornerback Cameron Watts, who visited in March, and a trio of early enrollees who participated in spring ball before everything was shut down. Those players are Krishon Merriweather, a 6-0, 230-pound linebacker, Ethan Carde, a 6-8, 320-pound offensive lineman and Devin Drew, a 6-4, 275-pound defensive lineman.
