According to a report by Forbes, Texas Tech All-American linebacker Jordyn Brooks is expected to receive a four-year contract worth in the neighborhood of $12.3 million which includes a signing bonus of $6.6 million after being drafted 27th overall by the Seattle Seahawks.
Forbes projected salaries for all 32 first-round picks of the 2020 draft and broke down how rookie contracts work in today’s NFL.
“NFL rookie contracts are determined by a complex formula that considers the league’s 2020 “rookie compensation pool” of $1.4 billion across all teams, as well as the $198 million per-team salary cap. The rookie pool is divided among the 32 NFL teams based on the clubs’ number of picks and where they fall within the draft. This year, the contracts for first-round picks range from $10.8 million for No. 32 pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire to the $36 million due (No. 1 pick Joe) Burrow.”
The article went on to say that signing bonuses represent the bulk of compensation each rookie will receive and will not be affected even if next season is shortened in any capacity by the coronavirus. Also, most first-round selections receive four-year contracts with a fifth-year team option.
Brooks became the first Texas Tech defender to be selected in the first round of the NFL Draft since Gabe Rivera was picked 21st overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1983.
