Wellman-Union ISD secondary students used a school day last week as a chance to learn more about college and what it takes to get in and to succeed, and also to learn about careers in the Ag industry.
Various college and university representatives were set up in the school gym for the 8th – 12th graders to browse and talk to the representatives about the schools. Schools represented were Lubbock Christian University, West Texas A&M University, South Plains College and Texas Tech. Brownfield Regional Medical Center and Oxy were also present to present information about career opportunities. All students were able to walk away with some goodies from each booth, such as pens, stickers, etc.
The students then loaded buses and headed to CalStar Dairy, where they toured and learned about the various things that go in to running a dairy, as well as working there. A few lucky students were chosen to bottle feed some new baby calves.
The buses then headed to Terry County Co-op Gin where Gin Manager Kyle King explained a little bit about what goes on at a gin and what career options are available there. The students also toured the gin plant and were amazed and the size and the power of the machines used during harvest and ginning season.
This was a great day of opportunity for the students to start thinking about college, and also learn more about the Ag industry that supplies us so well.
