Commentary: The Chuck & Nancy Show

The last few weeks we have been witness to some of the most partisan politics Washington has seen. The main sport these days is seeing who can make the other side look the worst, and get the soundbite on the evening news. The new House Majority Leader along with the Senate Minority Leader refuses to negotiate on border security in the hope that it will paint the President in a corner. The President continues to hold firm and shows no signs of backing down. While all this political drama has given the National media plenty to talk about, it’s doing nothing but causing heartburn for the country.

My question is this, how do we stop the insanity and bring back common sense, and love of country to D.C.?

Well, I think I have an idea…The last few months there have been those sleepless nights that have lead me to the television to try to get my mind to stop whirling. Well at that time of night there’s just one thing worth watching. The Roy Rogers Show, starring Roy Rogers, King of the Cowboys, Trigger his Golden Palamino, and Dale Evans Queen of the West!

Now what you may ask does Roy Rogers have to do with politics in 2019? Well The Roy Rogers show always showed the Good Guy winning out in the end, the good guy wore the white hat the bad guy wore the black hat. It was morality play each week that taught millions of Roy’s fans a lesson in life. Roy and Dale had a fan club that also had rules for the kiddos. Here are a few favorites…

Roy Rogers Riders Rules:

  1. Be courteous and polite.
  2. Protect the weak and help them.
  3. Be brave but never take chances.
  4. Study hard and learn all you can.
  5. Love God, and go to Sunday School regularly.
  6. Always respect our flag and country.

I think maybe our elected leaders could benefit from these Riders Rules especially numbers 2 and 10. Folks I think we need some of Roy’s 1950’s thinking now more than ever. Especially our folks in Washington. Used to our elected officials knew our country and government were founded on Christian principles. Members of the House and Senate used to have civil discourse, we didn’t bully or physically threaten those whose views differed from ours, they legislated…they met in the middle, not to say the battles weren’t fierce, but they got things done for the good of the country…that was job one…

Today it seems to be about the power, the status quo, and how far left or right we can go…what happened to the middle? What happened to putting the country and those who elected you first?

Now having said all this, there are a few that go against what seems to be the status quo. We have one shining example in Congressman Mike Conaway, who is the same no matter who he’s talking to, and works tirelessly for our region and country. Our own Congressman Arrington has gotten off to a great start and his star is rising as well.

While our West Texas folks are a good example of what’s right, there are far too many who seem to think their main job is to create havoc and division. It boils down to needing more Roy Rogers than the Chuck and Nancy Show…

I guess I can dream…Well Happy Trails for now…
