2019 Watermelon Roundup to Be Held

All attention will be focused on Plains on Saturday, August 31, when the 24th Annual Yoakum County Watermelon Round-Up will be held.

Starting at 7:45 with the running of both the 5K and 10K run, most of the activities will be held on lawn of former jail and the Courthouse.

Contestants in the two runs will range in age from 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 and older. The run will begin at 8:30 following registration at 7:45. The race will begin at the OLD TIRE SHOP BUILDING, 1 block north of the Yoakum County Library.

In addition to the two runs other events scheduled include the always popular Cow Patty Bingo, a watermelon eating contest, Kids Korner which will be held in the Pioneer Park across the street from the Courthouse and will feature kid’s games and Activities, a petting zoo, Inflatables, and the Little Miss and Little Mister Watermelon Round-Up Pageant.

The Miss and Mister Watermelon Pageant will begin at 11:00AM for all young boys and girls ages 0-12 years old. The entry fee is $30. Categories include Tiny Miss 7-10, Miss 11-12, Little Mister 0-3, and Mister 4-10. The Attire Theme is Patriotic or Watermelon.

The contestant who sells the most raffle tickets will receive 10% of the overall ticket sales and the title of SUPREME.

Other attractions for the one day event will be over 80 vendors and over 20 food vendors. Day long entertainment which will include Under the Double Eagle from Denver City will start at 9:15 and continue through 4PM. There will be a car show, a bike show with a Poker Run for each event. Registration for the car show will be from 9 to 10AM with an entry fee of $25. Cash prizes will be awarded. There will also be a Best of Show and a Mayor’s Choice. 

Other chairpersons include Karen Williams with the Set up and Car show, the Christian Motorcycle Association will head up the Bike Show, the Plains Clinic and Lifestyle will help organize the 5K and 10K run, Yoakum County 4-H is in charge of the Watermelon sales, Treon Minall is in charge of Hospitality, Martin Enriquez will be putting his talents into Watermelon slicing, and Terry Howard and the City of Plains Employees will have the task of cleaning up at the end of the day.

The Welcome Booth opens at 8 am followed by all Booths and Vendors open their doors at 9 am. Chloee Hunt will sing the National Anthem, the Poke Run and Bike Show along with Car Show registrations will also be at 9 am.

At 10 am Car judging will begin and one of the big events will be from 12 noon to 2 pm will be the Little Miss and Little Mister Watermelon Round-Up Pageant will be held on the Main Stage.

During the same time frame the Poker Run will start at 12:15 and at 1 pm Round One of the Cow Patty Bingo will take place. Also at 1 pm winners and awards will be announced for the Car Show.

At 2 pm the Bike show begins followed by Round 2 of Cow Pattie Bingo at 3 pm. Final Announcement and Farewell well be at 6 pm and with that the curtain will come down on the 24th Annual Watermelon Round-Up.
