Wellman-Union Lady Cat Volleyball preview, schedule, and roster.
Like the BHS Lady Cubs Volleyball squad, Wellman-Union Lady Cats Volleyball team gained a new coach this season. Of course, the coach is a familiar face, Jennifer Hogue. The Lady Cats that are on the team this season, may have had Hogue as a coach in Jr. High and have had her as a teacher at some point. Hogue comes back to WUISD after leaving for a year and is very excited and ready.
The Lady Cats bring back many starters from last season’s playoff team. Graduation only took three off the team, but the rest got to stay. Last season the Lady Cats came out on all cylinders and did really well early on the season. When district rolled around adversity came to plague the Lady Cats’. WU lost to Plains and Post, the bigger schools in district, however, they were able to get some wins over Rotan, Loop, and Aspermont. Those wins ended up being forfeited due to an ineligible player. When that happened the Lady Cats went back to square one and they scratched and crawled to earn a playoff spot.
“The Lady Cats are playing a tough pre-district season. My Seniors are stepping it up and taking on a leadership role. My juniors are giving 100% and my sophomore and freshman girls are a great addition to the team. I am excited for district play and what the girls will do. It’s going to be a great season for both, Varsity and JV.” said Coach Hogue.
This year, the hope is to go further than the program has ever gone in the playoffs. Thanks to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) biennial realignments and splitting the 1A and 2A schools from being in the same district, the Lady Cats already have a playoff berth. In their new district for the next two seasons, there are only three teams, Klondike, Loop, and of course Wellman-Union. Basically district this season just determines seeding for the three playoff-bound teams.
Although the Lady Cats have an automatic bid to the playoffs, they are sure hungry for a district title. Seniors like Kenzie Harp who received Libero of the Year and Kayley Cavazos who was All-District Honorable Mention will lead the team. The Lady Cats also return two juniors who will be a force. Those ladies are Haylee Boshears who received 1st Team All-District last season and Tina Friesen who earned 2nd Team All-District. Both girls have grown a lot in the past two years, and they are looking to be focused and ready come game days. Hogue has also added two more seniors to the roster, Abby Dyer, who has played in the past and looks ready to make some big plays, and Cameron Resendez, who has never played volleyball, has height and a strong arm and will create havoc at the net.
