The Wellman-Union CISD school board met Monday night December 12, 2022, and during the meeting hired their new superintendent. WUCISD has had the current interim superintendent Johnny Tubb, who come to WUCISD in late February 2022 after Ben Prowell’s resignation and went to Whitharral ISD to be its superintendent.

The WUCISD Board chose Nate Wheeler as its next superintendent. Of course, they named him the lone finalist a month ago in November 2022. State statute requires school districts to wait for 21 days before a school district’s board of trustees can officially hire the lone finalist.
Wheeler will be coming from Whiteface CISD where he was the superintendent. Wheeler is no stranger to the South Plains as he and his wife Kyna both graduated high school from Levelland. Wheeler previously was the Director of Operations and Administration at Plains ISD before to coming to WCISD in 2019. He also served as assistant secondary principal at Plains High School from 2015-2016, plus served as teacher/coach at Seagraves ISD from 2007-2015. Wheeler received his Bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech University in 2006 and earned his Master’s degree in 2015 and Superintendent’s certification in 2018, Lamar University. Wheeler’s wife was formerly employed at the Region 17 Education Service Center in Lubbock as an Education Specialist in Literacy. Nate and Kyna have two children; a son, Gage, and a daughter, Sadie.
Wheeler said, “We looking forward to planting roots here and excited for the future at WUCISD.” Wheeler will begin his tenure at WUCISD on February 1, 2023.
