Brownfield Lady Cubs & Runnin’ Cubs
Well, the new year is here and tournament season is over, so now it’s back to district action on the hardwood. The Lady Cubs are coming off a good showing at the Caprock Classic going 3-2. Brownfield began the tourney losing to #1 TAPPS 3A Lubbock Christian, then they took on #10 1A Whitharral winning 33-30. Next, they lost to #2 TAPPS 5A Grapevine Faith Christian. They finished the Caprock with wins over Ralls 57-21 and Midland Trinity 53-9.
Tonight, Jan. 2, 2024, the Lady Cubs travel over to Lamesa for another district battle. Brownfield is 1-1 in district action and can improve to 2-1. Lamesa is 2-1 and has wins over Muleshow 61-21, and Denver City 49-44. Their one loss in district so far is to Dimmitt, 35-40. The Lady Cubs have traveled to Dimmitt and come home winners over them 43-40 but lost at home to a good Littlefield squad 76-32, and that was without one of the starters for Brownfield. Tonight’s game should be a close one, and if the Lady Cubs want to be in this game, they’ll need to keep Lamesa’s offensive runs to a minimum. The Lady Cubs will finish up the week against Friona at home on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024.

The Runnin’s Cubs are also coming off a good showing at the Tatum Tough Tourney in Canyon. Brownfield was pooled with Canyon High and Clarendon. The Runnin’ Cubs lost to #16 4A Canyon High, however, turned around and won over 2A regional powerhouse Clarendon 55-42. Brownfield would then take on #9 1A Nazerath winning 50-41.
Now the Runnin’ Cubs look to go 2-0 in district action tonight, Jan. 2, 2024, when they take on Lamesa at Lamesa. There is no love loss between these two squads, so the game may get a bit heated. The Golden Tors are 1-0 in district beating Dimmitt 69-52. Both teams have three teams in common. Big Spring, Snyder, and Sweetwater. Lamesa lost to all three, Big Spring 53-57, Snyder 55-50, and Sweetwater 62-58. Brownfield on the other hand won over all three beating Big Spring 55-35, Snyder 61-40, and Sweetwater 56-52. No matter what teams both Brownfield and Lamesa have played, this game is a rivalry, and all records are out the door when tipoff takes place at 7:30 p.m. The Runnin’ Cubs will finish the week at home on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024 against Friona.

Meadow Lady Broncos & Broncos
The Lady Broncos took some time off over the holidays. They have not played a game since Dec. 19, 2023 and they face a tough non-district opponent tonight against Sands at Ackerly. The Lady Mustangs are two years removed from their state title, and although they may not be as good as they were the past five years, they will certainly give Meadow a run. However, this game can only help the Lady Broncos. They sport a 10-7 record on the season and a 1-2 record in district action, and those two district losses come from #8 Whiteface and #10 Whitharral. Meadow will get back to district action this Friday against Morton at Morton. By weeks end, the Lady Broncos should improve to 12-7.

The Broncos also took time off during the holidays and haven’t played a game since Dec. 19, 2023. Unfortunately, they post a 5-10 overall record and 0-1 in district losing to Amherst. The Broncos with a very young team will face off with a very tough Sands squad which is 11-6. Four of those six losses are from top-25 teams. However, this why you play the game. The Broncos will get back to district Friday evening to take on Morton which is also 0-1 in district.

Wellman-Union Lady Cats & Wildcats
The Lady Cats didn’t play in a tournament, however, they did hit the hardwood two separate times over the holiday break. The Lady Cats notched a good win over 2A Seagraves on Dec. 28, 35-32, and lost on Dec. 29 to an always good strong O’Donnell team. The Lady Cats are now 7-9 on the season and have not gotten to district yet. The Lady Cats travel to Lubbock today, Jan. 2, 2023, to take on All Saints. This should be a good game before they begin district action on Friday, Jan.5, 2023, against Klondike at home. Klondike had reached #9 in week four of the top-25, however has since dropped out of the rankings. With a good win over All Saints, the Lady Cats could come into their district opener and stun the Lady Cougars.

The Wildcats have seen better days and unfortunately, it just doesn’t get any easier for them as they take on the #5 TAPPS 2A All Saints tonight. Wellman-Union is 2-13 on the season. Of course, a young team with a brand-new coach has hindered them a bit. The Wildcats will not begin district play until next Tuesday, Jan 9, 2023, but they do get a chance to stay at home and play Spur on Friday night. Both teams have played Rotan and Spur lost to them and Wellman-Union won. This will be a great game to play before they open district action against Sands next week.
