Terry County and the South Plains are about to have their first real winter-like temperatures beginning tomorrow evening Saturday, January 13, 2024, and will last through Tuesday morning January 16, 2024. According to the National Weather Service, around 9:00 p.m. Saturday a cold front will begin to slide south. On Sunday morning between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m., will be the coldest at 13 degrees and will feel like -2 degrees with the windchill. The high will be 26 degrees and will feel like 14 degrees. On Monday, Jan. 15, 2024 it will be colder with a low 11 degrees feeling like -3 degrees and the will be 22 degrees feeling like 10 degrees. Moving on to Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2024, around 6:00 a.m. will a low of 7 degrees feeling like -8 degrees and the high will be 28 degrees. A warm up will take place Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2024 with a high of 53 degrees.

With this cold weather approaching, make sure you are prepared and consider doing these things:
- Minimize travel.
- Stay indoors during the worst part of the extreme cold.
- Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle if you must travel.
- Check tire pressure, antifreeze levels, heater/defroster, etc. before the cold weather hits.
- Learn how to shut off water valves for potential pipe bursts.
- Allow your water faucets to drip.
- Make sure exposed pipes are insulated.
- Check on the elderly.
- Bring pets inside.
If you have to be outside consider this:
- Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing, and a hat.
- Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.
- Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.
- Try to stay dry and out of the wind
