TX Gov. Abbott addresses increasing attacks on faith

by Eric

Governor Greg Abbott has issued a directive to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to strengthen security measures at places of worship in light of a troubling increase in violent attacks against individuals and religious institutions across the country. This initiative is a response to recent incidents that have raised concerns about safety among communities of faith.

The enhanced security efforts will involve close collaboration between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. These agencies will work together to assess vulnerabilities and implement targeted strategies to enhance safety protocols at churches, synagogues, mosques, and other faith-based organizations throughout Texas. The goal is to create a secure environment where individuals can gather for worship and community activities without fear. Additionally, DPS will provide resources and training to help places of worship develop robust security plans tailored to their specific needs and circumstances.

“Places of worship are sacred,” said Governor Abbott. “We will marshal all resources necessary to safeguard our places of faith. To accomplish that objective, I directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to bolster security efforts to protect places of worship.”

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is collaborating closely with local and federal law enforcement agencies to strengthen statewide security efforts. This comprehensive security initiative will involve multiple entities, including Texas Highway Patrol troopers, special agents from the Criminal Investigations Division, and the esteemed Texas Rangers, all supported by the Homeland Security Division. Their primary mission is to identify, assess, and prevent potential life-threatening attacks before they occur, ensuring the safety and security of all Texans.

In addition, Texans are strongly encouraged to take an active role in community safety by utilizing the iWatchTexas Community Reporting System. This crucial resource empowers the public to report any suspicious activities or behaviors they encounter in their neighborhoods, schools, or places of worship. Such vigilance can help identify potential threats related to crime, terrorism, or school safety.

Individuals can report suspicious activities conveniently through various channels: by downloading the iWatchTexas mobile app, accessing the official website at www.iwatchtx.org, or by calling the dedicated hotline at 1-844-643-2251. The process of submitting a report typically takes less than five minutes. Once a report is submitted, it is thoroughly reviewed by law enforcement analysts who are trained to assess potential threats. Importantly, all reports are treated with the utmost confidentiality, and while providing contact information is optional, it can facilitate follow-up questions if needed.

The iWatchTexas app is free and available for download on both iPhone and Android devices, making it easily accessible to all Texans. Community members are urged to download the app immediately to remain vigilant and contribute to the safety of their surroundings.

Please remember that the iWatchTexas program is not intended for emergencies. In case of an emergency situation that requires immediate assistance, it is critical to call 9-1-1 without delay. By working together and staying informed, we can all help create a safer Texas.
